Doctors Syndicate, Cairo, 1 November 2012
Doctors form human chain to highlight workplace problems
In their white coats, doctors left their hospitals
and headed to Qasr al-Aini Street.
Yahia Abdel Shafie, doctor
The reason for the protest is the government’s intentional negligence
of doctors demands to reform the health system
for the sake of patients and doctors.
One of the most important demands doctors
are issuing are the endorsement of new terms
of employment and the supply of proper medical
equipment to provide appropriate health care.
Karima al-Hefnawy, secretary general of the Egyptian Socialist Party
When the health budget is raised,
patients will find beds, medications
and properly functioning equipment.
Patients will not be asked to come later
because the equipment is out of order.
They will find incubators and beds in ICUs.
Therefore, the doctors demand for increasing
the health budget from 5% to 15% is a just one.
The doctors call for better security at their workplaces
after a number of hospitals were attacked.
Hana Aboul Ghar, senior member of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party
Doctors at hospitals cannot
be left to worry about their safety.
I don’t think they can help in such conditions.
Today’s protest comes after a series of other
protests and conferences in which
doctors made their demands.
The last of these protests is a nationwide strike
in which participation levels reached 80%.
Alaa Mohamed
After the protest, we will meet
to escalate action.
Doctors are still awaiting the satisfaction of their demands
for patients to have better hospitals and treatment.
