Hi, this is Nanette Hosenfeld with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City,
Utah. This is the weekly fire weather briefing, created on Monday August 19th, 2013.
Looking at the week ahead, the main area of concern is widespread thunderstorms due to
moisture across the state. However, with abundant moisture in place, these thunderstorms
will be wet. The main fire weather threat will be gusty, erratic winds in the vicinity
of thunderstorms that develop. With these thunderstorms, there is the potential for new fire
starts, and personnel on existing fires should be aware of dangerous lightning that may
accompany storms.
While we are expecting thunderstorms to develop each afternoon through about
Thursday, confidence is highest that thunderstorms will develop over the higher terrain of Utah
on Monday and Tuesday. We have medium confidence that thunderstorms will be more
widespread Tuesday than Monday, as a disturbance is forecast to cross the state Tuesday. The
area of lowest forecast confidence is in regards to the return of drier air and
increased winds to northwestern Utah Friday afternoon.
As far as a quick weather outlook, widespread moisture will remain in place across the
state through about Thursday. With this moisture in place, thunderstorms will develop each
afternoon. With these thunderstorms, watch for gusty and erratic winds, lightning,
and areas of heavy rain.
Drier air is expected to move into northwestern Utah Friday. This will result in decreased
coverage for showers and thunderstorms, and lower RH values. Elsewhere in the state,
expect another day with showers and thunderstorms.
