Hi there, my name is Anya Court and I studied single honours English at Birmingham University
which was a three course involving modules in English Literature and English Language
as well. I chose to study at Birmingham because the University is a really good redbrick university
with an excellent reputation in both research and teaching as well. The English Department
also has a really good reputation both for its teaching and its research. The campus
in Edgbaston is also just a short ride away from the Shakespeare Institute and the Royal
Shakespeare Company Theatres in Stratford which was obviously really good for the degree
that I was studying. When I first came to look round Birmingham I was struck by how
friendly all the staff and students were. Its set on a really beautiful green campus
and it has a great community feel to it despite being located in the second biggest city in
the country. I’d definitely recommend Birmingham to anybody considering Universities at the
moment both for undergraduate and postgraduate study as well. I really enjoyed studying English
at Birmingham. I particularly liked having the choice of which modules to study in my
second and third years. The English department at Birmingham really allows you to personalise
your degree and choose which literature and which authors you would like to study in particular.
By my third year I was able to specialise in my favourite authors and I decided to focus
particularly 19th century Victorian literature studying authors like Charles Dickens, Rudyard
Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle and I also focused my dissertation on Theme of Identity in Wilkie
Collines novels. Since graduating from Birmingham last summer I have been working for a Birmingham
based PR consultancy called Haslimann Taylor. On a day to day level my job involves a lot
of press release writing, organising events and launch parties, writing copy for clients.
It’s a great company to work for, my jobs really exciting with no two days the same,
it’s really varied. I think my time at Birmingham University has definitely prepared me and
given me the necessary skills to succeed in a career in PR, both in terms of what I learnt
on my degree and also the extra skills I gained from writing and editing the student newspaper,
working on the English Societies Literary Magazine and also getting involved in Societies
at the Guild as well.
