Hello, I'm Professor Paul Coulthard and I am delighted to talk to you as Head of the
School of Dentistry. The school of dentistry is strong. It has a staff of committed and
successful teachers, researchers and professional support staff.
Some Dental Schools are strong at research, others are strong at teaching. In Manchester,
we are strong in both. We produce healthcare professionals and researchers who are of the
highest calibre. In the last National Research Assessment Review,
Manchester Dental School was the top School for research in the UK. The School is engaged
in improving the oral and craniofacial health and well being of people locally, nationally
and worldwide. We have an international reputation for research
into Cleft Lip and Palate, Oral Cancer, Biomaterial Sciences and Health Services Research.
The School also hosts the Cochrane Oral Health Review Group which produces systematic reviews
that have helped shape policy and guidelines altering clinical practices across the world.
The School has a research collaboration with Colgate Palmolive which produces world leading
research in the diagnosis and management of dental disease.
The School delivers the highest standards of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
and learning integrated with outstanding clinical training. The focus for our undergraduate
curriculum is enquiry based learning and clinical teaching. Clinical exposure starts very early
and is integrated into both the BDS and BSc programmes. Our graduates have excellent employment
prospects and many of our alumni have gone on to take up senior leadership positions
in the UK and around the world. The Dental School provides a range of teaching
and learning for postgraduate students to. We have many MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes
to offer. Our MSc programmes may be taken over one year full-time, two years part-time
or over three years full time in a programme that incorporates full clinical training.
We also offer a four year PhD programme that incorporates clinical experience.
The School of Dentistry is an integral part of the Campus of the University of Manchester,
it is also part of the community of one of the most vibrant cities in the UK. Our students,
both undergraduate and postgraduate attend outreach clinics across Greater Manchester.
Here, the students provide dental care to children and adults who cannot otherwise access
dental care. Our School is very happy and successful place
to be and I am proud to be the Head of School. I hope you will come and visit us sometime
in the future.
