Today at Knifehog, we're taking a look at the Spyderco Endura series of everyday carry
knives. Founded in Golden, Colorado, by Sal and Gale
Glesser Spyderco is at the forefront of American cutlery since 1981. Now in its forth iteration,
the Endura lightweight series sets the standard for everyday carry knives.
Tested during a recent fishing and camping trip by Knifhog staffers, we found the blade
to be perfect for everything from cutting mono filament to cleaning our catches. Our
only complaint is that the blade dulls slightly when used for heavier duty activities, making
it somewhat less desirable as a folder for survivalists.
Out of the box the Endura is extremely sharp, so be careful. Constructed with Japanese VG-10
steel, it's designed for strength. This knife shouldn't shift nor dull quickly, but this
was not the case with our tests. The blade is long at over 3 ½" but not so
long that it won't easily fit into your pocket and, like all Spyderco knives, comes with
a patented Spyderco opening. The Endura handle is constructed of fiberglass reinforced nylon
and yes, we've listened to your comments. FRN is not comfortable, we get that but it
is light weight and very durable. The handle comes in many different colors and the bidirectional
texturing provides sure grip, even when wet. The handle is contoured to fit any average
sized hand. Those of you with larger hands may not enjoy how thin the total package is.
As far as carry options go, Spyderco got it right with their clip. The Endura 4's pocket
clip can be adjusted for right or left hand carry and can be worn tip up or tip down.
Endura's range anywhere from $80-$100 making this a mid-tier knife in price but not in
quality and craftsmanship. On the downside, the tip has a cheap black coating that wears
off quickly but that's a very minor inconvenience. All of the flaws on the Spyderco Endura 4
are minor. It's easy to see why this has become the most
popular everyday carry knives. We give this 4 out of 5 stars.
