The Management Centre from the Turkish Cypriot Community
and the NGO Support Centre from the Greek Cypriot Community
joined forces under the umbrella of the project
Engage – Do your part for peace.
NGO Fair 2011.
Today we are organizing this festival in Nicosia.
Its objective is to bring the general public of Cyprus closer to NGOs.
NGOs in Cyprus are active in various areas.
Some of them are involved with humanitarian issues,
like the Cyprus Volunteer Doctors.
Some organizations are purely cultural, such us Culture in Action.
All these organizations, you can see them, their banners and representatives on my right,
are here to distribute their material and to inform people
how every individual can be involved and contribute some time
for such a constructive cause which adds value to the civil community of Cyprus.
It seems that people have started showing interest.
As you can see our banner is full on both sides.
There were plenty of people in the morning.
People are interested to know about the activities of NGOs.
People apparently want peace in Cyprus.
The messages are: We want solution now!
Mostly Peace and Reunification.
People stop and ask.
They may not be adequately informed.
Yet they realize that something exists.
They start realizing that there are organizations that are not related to the government,
which are not private and which are non-profit.
There are also people who subscribe and become members of NGOs.
Engage – Do your part for peace is a reconciliation project.
its main objective is to get the civil society organizations
engaged in the peace process.
As you can see there are about 30 civil society organizations
exhibiting here together with a lot of activities.
The activities are mainly music as you can hear, and also dancing.
We use the opportunity here to show to all those visiting tourists
that civil society organizations from both sides are
hand in hand working for reconciliation.
We want a solution in Cyprus
and in order to have this solution civil society organizations have a duty to work together.
This is really what we are demonstrating here at Lokmaci and Ledras street crossing.
