Right Now: You are hearing a note.
Right Now: You are comparing it to a note you just heard
Right Now: You are predicting what note you are going to hear next
All three of these things are happening at the same time.
This is called audiation.
You are only hearing one note at a time.
Each note has a definition.
(volume level, pitch, duration)
But definition is not what moves us.
Meaning is what moves us.
Alone, each note is inherently meaningless.
You give meaning to it, by comparing it with the note you have heard.
This comparison is something that only you can do for yourself.
Imagine that there is a tablet in your mind,
and on that tablet is written the meaning for the note you are currently hearing.
Only you can write on that tablet.
No one can write their meaning on your tablet.
It is in your mind and only you have access to it.
This makes you a very powerful artist,
for you are the creator of the meaning.
Thus, you are the creator of your own experience.
What you are hearing does not become music,
until you make it so.
There is more to the story.
Music and language are processed in the same way.
Three things are happening at the same time.
You are hearing a word.
You are comparing it to a word you just heard.
And you are predicting the word you expect to hear next.
Just like notes, words are inherently meaningless.
They have definitions.
But definitions do not move us.
Meaning is what moves us.
Where there is an emotional response, there is a meaning that was created.
Wounds are a response to the meaning and not the definition.
Because the three elements of audiation occur at the same time,
it creates the illusion that they are the same thing.
Because the word occurs the same time as the wound,
it creates the illusion that the word caused the wound.
This is a very powerful illusion.
Should you ever find yourself angry,
Should you ever find yourself hurt,
Should you ever find yourself offended,
stop and ask yourself two questions:
"what is the meaning that is written on that tablet?"
And
"Who made it mean that?"
(Applause) (Cheers)
