Welcome to the City of Oshawa's enhanced website. My name is Heather Dunn and over the next
few minutes, I'm going to provide you with a tour to show some of the new features
as well as accessibility tools that we have incorporated on this site. So let's get started.
The first enhancement I want to go over with you today is our photo carousel. This is a
great place to find featured events and key information for our City. By selecting, the
read more link to your right in the blue box you will be able to receive
additional information.
Our homepage now has a refreshed look and quick access to some of the information you
look for most such as our Recreation & Culture Services, our Meeting & Event Calendar, our
Service Updates, Public Notices, a How Do I section, A to Z services and quick access
to City Council.
And our top stories where you can stay informed with what is happening in our City.
Additionally we have added social media sites to the front page. You can now access Twitter,
Facebook and YouTube all from the homepage
Looking for information on City services or programs? You now have two options directly
from the City's home page.
Our A to Z Services will provide you with a list of key words to commonly requested
information.
Such as, maybe you are looking for next waste pick up. So you might look at G for garbage
or W for waste collection if you select G and you go to garbage collection and it
will take you directly to the site.
The How Do I section is another great option located directly on the homepage that will
provide you with information you may be looking for. In this section, you have the ability
to apply for it, pay for it, have your say, report it, find a place or obtain additional
information. In addition to their location on the home
page the A to Z Services as well as the How Do I section are located on the top right
hand corner of all the City's subpages.
Accessibility is another key area that is enhanced. You can now select the text size
that best suits your needs to improve readability of the website. Additionally, Browse Aloud
is now available and is FREE to use. This text-to-speech tool will read the text on
the page to you. It is free, does not require a download, and will work simply by putting
the curser where you want it to begin reading.
The final upgrade that I am going to show you today is our Meeting and Events Calendar.
So say you are looking to find out when the next Council or advisory meeting might be
happening or you are looking to find out about an event in our community. This is a great
go to spot. You can search by date, location, and even type of event.
Additionally we've added Google Maps so now you can print out directions to all these
events.
Are you interested in adding and event or meeting information to your calendar or being
notified of an upcoming meeting? Not a problem.
You can now export meetings and events to calendars and subscribe to notifications.
To all of you who are involved in community groups out there. The calendar is a fantastic
way to communicate your next big event. By selecting the submit your event link; you
can fill in the information and submit it to the City of Oshawa. Once approved it gets
posted to our calendar. The bonus is that anything that gets posted to our calendar
is also distributed through the City's Twitter and Facebook accounts going out to thousands
of followers.
Thanks for watching today. Do you have a comment or suggestion? We want to hear it; your feedback
is always welcome!
