Hey everyone how are you doing this is Tim Holtz
today we are going to talk about the Pocket
Watch this is my Pocket Watch from idea-ology this is really cool because this
is a little embellishment that you can
actually add other embellishments inside
it is designed just like a watch it's made of metal with a glass front
it's got a removable back and inside is about a quarter inch clearing so you can add
all types of different embellishments everything from Game Pieces to a lot of
different idea-ology findings you can have little shake-able stuff in there
like glitter or beads inside
you can do them for themes holidays ornaments wearable stuff mixed media
just about anything so I want to take you through and show you how
these actually go together
so first off we've got
the watch itself this is what's going to come in the package and the first thing
is figuring out how to open this up well the back actually has a metal plate that
is removable you need to look around the edge and it's really difficult to
see it at first but if you look around
you'll see a slight little indentation of a tab and it may not be at the bottom
some times it's off on the side the trick to opening that up is get
ting yourself a craft pic k
I find it much easier to use a needle than a screw driver or anything else
you're going to find that little tab let me look in there
and I'm just going to take that pick and really pry it under there
and the back will pop right off just like that
so we've got our back and remember this part is glass so you want to set aside when
you're going to work with it
now when we create the watch it's really important to create inside the
back part so I don't really
even focus on this at first I really want to work with the back
and there's a lot of different things that we can put inside first off we're going
to decide on our background so we can work with
paper
one of the things I really like are the snippets from my Paper Stash line
because they're a small design
of a larger print paper so when I cut it down to the small
circle I actually get the good stuff the
cool stuff that's in it all I want to do for a background is just take this
place it down I'm not too particular with this and you'll see why because you're
going to have to do some trimming quite a bit when you're doing this so just take a
pen and kind of sketch around there unfortunately there is no punch or die-cut
that is going to fit this and
I'm just going to chop it out with scissors real quick
not really caring too much about that and then I'm going to
cut this out and when I cut it out I actually want to cut out on the inside
because this piece of paper is going to need to
fit inside the back of the watch I'll
explain that in just a second so just going to kind of go around
trim that out
take the back piece check my work not too bad
fits right in just like that if it didn't fit you can just go in and trim it again
not a big deal now it's up to you whether you want to adhere this piece of paper in
the back or whether you want to leave this loose and change it out because if
you just had one pocket watch you can actually make different backgrounds
and change it out because this watch can open and close indefinitely so
let's talk about what we put inside
there's a lot of cool things if you could put inside like I mentioned
Game Pieces anything up to about a quarter inch thick will fit inside there the
best way to test it is let's say we had some embellishments I'll grab a couple
of Sprocket Gears and stuff like that you can stack whatever embellishments
you want whether it's going to be some
gears a spinner a fastener and then take the top of the watch and
just set it over the top If it doesn't touch the glass it's going to be clear if
it touches that glass I wouldn't suggest putting in there
because if you force this closed it'll close but then the
glass is going to shatter and then you'll have
a whole different type of watch so we don't really want to do that
now let's talk about the words and things because one of things I really
like about these watches
is the ability to put different words or sentiments in there
there's a lot of different things first off I've got a great set of stamps from
Stampers Anonymous and one of theses - this one is called Stuff To Say it actually
has a lot of different verses and this really really long quote now this quote also
comes of course wood mounted
and the reason I designed this quote believe it or not is so I had all these
little words
to put the inside little projects so
you can stamp that out and now I can go in and cut out whatever word or words I
want
so maybe I want the word cherish so I
cut that out with my scissors so I like the ability to have a stamp
more than anything because I can make
multiples of projects especially if you're
going to do this as gifts for someone so
want to cut this out you want to cut it out as close as you possibly can to the edge then
we're going to go in with the ink blending
tool it has to distress already on it which if you have a blending tool it
probably does you can just use whatever is left over ink on there because we're just
going to create
a little shadow or shading effect on the background now
when it comes to assembling this there's a lot of
different ways that you can do this if you're going to use embellishments with
brads you can take this paper out and literally pierce right
through it and add your paper fasteners and fasten it to the
paper just like that or you can use different types of adhesives I like to work
with either glossy accents or multi medium if I'm going to glue embellishments
in
like Pen Nib or Plaquettes or anything like that I would
glue those in because these glues will
dry
clear which is really nice
especially when it's under glass as for the words I like to use things
like foam tape now if you can find black foam
tape
that's really nice if you don't have black foam tape and are
using white foam tape you may want to go in with a marker and color
the edge because you will see it under
the glass especially when you wear this at an angle
alright so this I would just cut this out
put under the back and stick this right
to the background so embellishing is
pretty easy because there's a lot of different ideas on how to embellish it
but the big thing is how does it go together
well when you're ready to put it together you simply
have your background completed of course you've got the top of the watch
place right over the top and literally
squeeze it together and it will quick close and that's it it's done if you want to open
it find that tab again pry off and change it up So you can
see here with the pocket watch a lot of different variations lot of different ideas this
makes like I said a great gift whether it's for a baby shower and you're gonna put
a small photo in there
maybe for a wedding favor or just for you to
wear your art around
