Hello and welcome to the Social Justice Fund Northwest Site Visit Diaries
This is YOU!
This is a Potential Grantee
On a site visit, you have three main goals
as a representative of Social Justice Fund
First, Listen to the potential grantee talk about their work in their own words
Next, learn more about the organization, its issues and its communities
so you can be an advocate for them when it comes to decision-making time for grants
Finally, build community by helping form a good relationship between Social Justice Fund
and the broader progressive movement
Sometimes, site visits can have some unwelcome visitors
The Gods of Philanthropy
Make sure to keep a look out for...
BOOTSTRAPOLIS
"No one helped me get where I am. I am a self-made man.
There is no excuse to not get what you need in life. Just look at me!"
BENEFACTRODITE
"I must have all this money because I must have a gift for the right answers!
That is why I am so generous with my money and my opinions. So people can learn and then thank me!"
WORCULES
"I've come from a long line of hard working people that made the right decisions.
If people did the same, they'd be as successful as I am!"
Here's what can happen if the Gods of Philanthropy tag along on your site visit...
Grantee: ....the community that we represent faces many barriers, especially succeeding in the education system.
Our programs are designed to support their individual learning needs.
Visitor: I grew up in a similar community and was able to overcome the same barriers by myself
so I don't really get the need for your program..
AWKWARD!
It can also look like this...
Grantee: ...because of our experiences as people living in this neighborhood,
we finally decided to open this community center.
Visitor: That's great, but have you thought about spending less on rent
and meeting at a library so you can save money?
AWKWARD!
It can even happen like this...
Grantees: We were partially successful with our collaboration with the Sheriff's office to pass this ordinance,
but now we are bringing the community together to reassess our strategy
Visitor: You know what you should do? You should check out the website of this organization I consulted with last year!
They worked really hard to pass a similar ordinance and they didn't make some of the mistakes I can see happening with your campaign.
AWKWARD!
Without the Gods of Philanthropy, your site visit will be more fulfilling for everyone.
Visitor: Thanks for having us here today! Let me start by saying that we are not a group of experts.
We are a group of volunteers that decided to join a Giving Project this year.
We're here to learn as much as we can from your work, and take it back to the group and then make a decision on our funding
Grantees: Awesome! It's great to meet you!
What questions do you have for us?
Visitor: I am excited to learn about how you develop leadership in your organization, especially around diversity. Could you tell us more about that?
As social justice philanthropists, our role is to act as allies to social justice movements
by contributing not only with money, but with time, skills, knowledge and access.
Site visits are a powerful opportunity to live our values while connecting
with people all over the northwest doing critical organizing work in their communities.
We'll see you on a site visit!
