Amid the devastation and destruction, a story of hope.
A four-year-old boy was trapped by mud and debris after the hillside collapsed onto a
town in Washington state.
But a helicopter rescue team managed to lift him out of the rubble.
The delicate operation meant the helicopter had to hover overhead while the volunteer
climbed out, balancing on the unstable ground to try to reach the young boy.
The death toll from the landslide currently stands at 24, with 90 people still listed
as missing. Some of the bodies are still trapped in the mud, as search and rescue teams have
not yet been able to reach them.
The fate of around 35 more people is also unknown.
The mudslide already counts as one of the worst in US history. And while stories such
as this provide a glimmer of hope, as more time passes, the chance of finding more survivors
becomes increasingly remote.
