I’m Beatrice Johnson from Virginia Beach, Va. I’m here tonight at Holy Family Catholic
Church [for] a cookout. [This is] the last event for the Young Life Capernaum Group that
next year will be called The Chosen.
Stephanie has been going to this group. My daughter [is] Stephanie Johnson. Stephanie
has been going to this group for many years and she really enjoys it. Don’t you enjoy
it, Steph?
Yes, I do. What kind of things do you do here? I do games, and dancing, and pray. Pray. They
have a talk about Jesus, and about God, and how He fits into your life. And then we have
pizza before we go home. Tonight we are having a cookout [with] hamburgers and hotdogs.
We believe as Catholics that the most important thing that our religion teaches us is to be
prolife and to love all people. And that everyone has their place under the sun. And like [the
lines of a] song, by {author unknown} we will all live in God’s friendship because He
has willed it. All of our people who are mentally challenged, they know that they have challenges.
And they look to us to help them bridge the gap between spirituality, God, and social
formation for them.
This is a great charity. This is an outstanding charity because all of these kids – I say
kids but they are really young adults. There is no age limit. This is the way it really
has to be. They don’t really see age or they don’t really see status. They know
they are handicapped to a certain extent but they don’t really focus on that. They just
love [and want] to see their friends that are struggling through life with the same
kind[s] of a handicap. Just like we are, you know.
