Would you please state your name?
Alex...well Alexander "Bingo" James, to be exact.
Your middle name is..."Bingo"?
Yea, yea I legally changed it in '73.
It was my...
...finest moment actually, I actually won the
world championship of bingo.
Ah, interesting.
Please tell me more.
What else is there to say? I'm the best, so I won.
Oh, uh...
Well, can we see your trophies?
So here they are.
As you can see I have gold which I won in '73.
First place.
But even better is my platinum...
...from '74.
I think that's silver.
It's platinum.
So, what do you think of bingo as a sport?
Bingo?
Bingo is more than a sport.
Bingo is my life.
So, uh... what's your name?
Oh uh, I'm David "My friends call me" Dave.
So how did your career in bingo begin?
I wouldn't call it a career in bingo...
I don't know. I started playing...
I was part of a
Little Little Little Little
Brothers program.
You visit an old folk, at an old folk's home, I guess.
And I met this woman Maple.
She loved bingo.
She loved the game.
And uh...I kinda picked it up from her.
She recently passed away.
It was while she was playing bingo.
And um...
It was spinning, and she reached to get a ball, and her hand got caught...
...and by the time we got her out it was too late.
So I'm kinda playing this
game because of
her memories.
Can you tell us more about this
underground bingo scene?
Oh, the underground?
Yea, it's pretty hardcore. I mean, it's where I got my start.
It's not your grandma's bingo game...
Although,
there were a lot of grandmas there, but that's besides the point.
So, how do you hone your skills at bingo?
Um...what skill? It's luck.
There's no skill involved at all, actually.
So, how do you train?
Well, I have a very rigorous training routine,
starting from sunup to sun down
I can't tell you too many secrets, but uh well...
I have carpal tunnel on both of my hands.
How do you feel about your competition?
Competition?
ALEX: I'm sorry I don't know what that word means exactly... DIRECTOR: It means who's playing against you...
No, I know what it means...I was making a point, okay.
That kid...
He's hopeless.
I mean, he's okay, I guess. He's good for the friday night,
you know, Cache Creek games.
But when it comes to me...
When it comes to my circuit....
He's hopeless.
So tell me...
How do you feel about your competition?
The guys I'm playing with?
I don't really know anybody.
DIRECTOR: Specifically, Alexander "Bingo" James. DAVID: Oh, I know him...
He's a...
He sent me some messages.
He's lobbying to get...
...bingo into the Olympics.
Which seems like overkill.
I don't think anybody would watch it, but...
I think maybe he just wants another medal.
He sent me a lot of messages. He's a good guy, though.
He really is, he just maybe takes it a little bit too seriously.
Hey David, it's me...Alex.
Calling again...
Didn't pick up the last phone call...
So, you know...
Just keep ringing in until you answer me. Got some serious stuff to talk about.
...it involves bingo...
He's kind of a character.
I know you're there David...
Alright, so are you excited at all?
Umm....
Not really, I guess. I don't know
I'll have to find out where this place is.
But, I don't know, I'll see if it's fun. I hope it will be, though.
Do you think you'll win a grand prize?
Whatever it is, I'd be happy to win it, but I don't really know.
Is that...?
Oh, looks like they lost their funding.
Let's play.
Looks like you won. Congratulations.
It was a good game, it's a good game.
ALEX: Yea, you earned it man. DAVID: Nah, you take it.
Thank you so much.
