Welcome to Tottenham, this is one of the famous sites of Tottenham.
The Spurs football ground.
Tottenham is planning to actually make a major difference in the area
and expand on their stadium
with lots of other plans too,
We are quite anxious, but also excited about how we can actually join actions in
the community
and bring nature closer to
all communities in Tottenham.
We've been talking to ...
Tottenham Foundation ... they seem to be interested in our agenda of
understanding food and creating a different
type of agenda around food.
We have got big challenges like obesity in our communities
but we also have
enormous amounts of spirit to try to make a difference.
And we hope with 'Spurs' like other partners like Lea Valley
and Haringey Council and our community
voluntary sector and other people like Growing in Haringey ...
a residents group
can help and support
to promote the message of Blooming Beds and Bees.
which means ...
nature closer to our communities.
Well you know what about Blooming Beds and Bees ... it's turned out to be ...
so much more
than we ever thought it would be.
originally we thought it was going to be just a seven week course, fairly limited
but with what people wanted and the ideas we put in
it became a twenty one week course, for many more people than we thought.
People have come from all sorts of places
always a very different understanding of what they want to achieve
and different aims, but always that same intention
bringing more nature and bringing more respect for the environment
and having more control and more empowerment around their food supply.
Well we were just parked on Mill Mead Road
because we had come to look at the flats and we were hoping to buy in the
new development next door
and we saw the allotments and we thought ... brilliant.
Allotments just over the road, 'cause you know, we had always wanted an allotment
and came to the gate
and Leyla came out in a straw hat and kinda said come and join us, come and join in and
and be part of this
just straight away without
even an introduction and then we got to talking ...
and she said we're starting a bee keeping course soon
and we would like you to be involved and then we got involved in the community garden as well
and it's brilliant just being in this area of London and being able to get outdoors
and have a bit of a green space and
grow some food and
be involved in something this this kind of
in contrast to the local area it's brilliant.
It's quite an urban environment Tottenham is
there's not huge amount of green spaces
so at the allotments here they can grow food ...
and hopefully take some of the things they learn
from that to their own plots
and one of the other things that we thought that they could do also quite simply
is to keep bees, so it gives them some sort of contact with nature ..
and it's probably the easiest way of actually getting involved with keeping livestock.
First time i came down i was a bit
sort of weary of the bees and um ...
handling them and that sort of thing, but after a few weeks, getting use to it
and seeing what Ian was doing and what he was showing us to do
built your confidence a lot
by the end of the ...
four or five weeks session you actually felt yeah
i really want to get in there and do that. The Idea of the course is to set up
some bee keepers, probably about ten community bee keeping groups within
the Tottenham, Haringey area.
so the idea is to ...
get people who are complete beginners, complete novices and bring them up to
a level where they can look after the bees themselves
and without too much intervention from ourself or other experienced bee keepers.
I think it was one of the best courses i've ever been on.
it's not just helped me out with the bees and shrubs and flowers ...
but i've made lots of friends
who are now bee keepers and we can call on each other, any time for any help we need.
The courses has been run by Ian Baily
an extremely good bee keeper and he has done it for at least twenty years.
to me that is worth for a million pounds.
Because you don't go away 'haff cocked' ... that you don't know what they're talking
about. He explains it extremely slowly and very easily, it's not hard and it's the best
We've got two hundred and fifty species of bee
and ...
there's a lot of publicity for the honey bee, but very little for all the others
and they're just as important
honey bees have their place
but the other species of bees
provide us with our food as well.
So it's important to understands what they need and what their requirements are.
and get people interested in bees,
and in getting interested in bees, getting interested in nature in a wider context.
This is quite a different course to what i normally teach.
in that ...
we're really teaching people to go and take their learning
very specifically to other parts of their own communities
that really maximizes and multiplies the learning they do
and brings elements of self learning that is so important rather than just all being taught.
It's a very mixed bunch of skills that people have been bringing
some people have brought an amazing knowledge of herbs, some have brought
an amazing knowledge of wildlife, of bio-diversity, of conservation
of tools, of ..
body awareness... and everyone's been really learning from each other ...
and i think as the course progressed
i almost feel like my role and Leyla's role have really kind of ...
really grown down as
the people in the course have really increased their input into
the course.
The pack's been very important
first it's grown ...
alongside people skills so every every week the packs got bigger
the packs contained handouts and fact sheets about horticulture about
community gardens
but mainly it's been i think a reminder for people to build a portfolio. My other
job inside of hear is to do outreach work... and figuring out which work
specifically
and i suppose we experimented with quite a lot of formats, in how we do that
and how we encourage people to take leads
in growing food in their communities.
and i think that to me this looks like a very efficient format
because people have been really doing that
gonzo salam mosque gold are really have cartoons that got very little experience
of grammar and fayed toll
cannon falls in
uh... staging really understanding where it comes from something coming down
still altman really help them see safing stressed hands and i have some practical
experience that i probably wouldn't go otherwise the messiah to hassle in eight
states have to stop growing having growing spices in the front of the
school i'm really rectifying the allotment that sanyal who has a plot of
famine land next to the nursery which was an old caretakers kardam so we
started doing the prospect alf version of the project from than uh... serena
and and space so they falls from aunt
avoid being interested in making in entering our children get field
of allowing for today's profound
and the process that that the coastal go through to grow food
but we did not the means to do it from the very beginning
the when building beds and be stable on that's okay with the means to uh... for
the project inc
and indexing beast projects came up
time i then of course
and cobb that calls for us to
start your own projects in leadership and development program
an unaccompanied the school and i was doing the learning walk here
manafort into the god-given awful
this place is
graphics and i had seen how much my children
laughlin in iran will not be loved rowen insane
i mean tomatoes and
and i thought would be wonderful the children of the school to be able to get
back saying
feeding and enthusiasm
it's also way of getting to a genie based as if they'd tell light green
it's the family
they usually end up more happy to keity the project is part of the curriculum
and we can look at what in the science curriculum
it is about growing things found living things actually need to know that have
become a product profit from it if you have to go through
they've it's part of a curriculum
another and it's also part of our work with the community
we very much prodded to graduate activity and we're always looking for a
means to announce that work
now with more something made to get some of the parents
done is
give them some basic
understanding of what plans so i have a twelve
for the minds of the contents of that they can actually come see with the
children of the planting
and then go away and found themselves and hopefully what with people to do
that
is to get parents and children
engaging in that act together so this is actually face one of the projects in
face students resented the
expanded and
growing fruits and giving the children and pero wild analytical and about
wildlife
ultimately what we wanted to these two
in case the children's cell what does it
ports the ps
this training
into their lives so that
as they get old dot they can appreciate nature more
they can appreciate
food when it comes from
ultimately hospice onto their children
so it's actually intergenerational thing and if we get the parents and children
working together
it's something that i always remember
project start seeds
late last year landry were able to get a contracts with
loops of the steam shop fronts leukemias contacted three years and to convert the
space into a food grainy community spends
we've received training from
you needed to be so i'm on the empty keeping cheney i'm also on the feed
grains training and weak hands
unhealthy safety training hands feet high teens training
from the libyans bs and also we've had quite a lot of support
soul seen resources also just seen
and support for volunteers to come down
were convinced the youngest person that was pretty seven
and the eldest is eighty nine
and so it deep green slight uniquely to play he shouldn't which means he teaches
people about seemed to green fugitives he speaks about the importance of the
environment
it also makes a big difference to you there
the residents of concede things happening through their windows around
us in a and just being here
has made a big difference to the whole
came
because people of started making
changes for the best time
seemed to make the whole spends now
and more competent person
part of the great basin regard it was to bring everything together again
including mean he says it will be needed to be stressful
so all the different projects in anyone's evoke coming show of what
they've done
it will be all kind of take on the joke see fashion
and we did dot sebab never forget the two weeks of planning
the weather was terrible weeded out of five to six hundred people dead
um... against all the odds but what was great that he was everyone that i've
been involved in the benefits of these issues and want sound
trying to get it we we did was team info on a big festival
we call this will shorten the work done
scarecrow competition music of the food
everything
it was fantastic and a whole heaving despite the weather
what was special was defeat between a list of work for that divide between
your everybody was really
repose active unaware we will also try to be a good value we actually
felt for you
scotland's com
definite check kids'll historians
opting to love what this type of community project office
some people there's more to talk to them
then that's fantastic sold
things a under the spotlight uh... inside brings people together and makes
people feel better about what they did
and the fact that there are opportunities outside the front door
backtracked to succeed on a daily basis
bizarre lot going on is looking into human being i feel centuries
and this is really nice to be able to come out ahead
and feel like and
stuart but something
and actually be able to have
and spend some time looking off the something has new residents in that
community important that we
that we think that we were involved in the case here and not just ten infinite
building going and i think the building where i think our health
gated community
something that can be indicate why a stating that
finished shooting these really uh... contributing means
breastfeed and actually
schools
housing estate many people
young people of all got involved in their own projects in the process
and and it's possible
to turn
what would be really care isn't growing areas picking him up with the eighteen
making hymie and healthy living
he actually works as the first thing
and as a whole kit bond at the second thing is
we didn't have enough time to protect your support
community champions instinctively going over the course of the dough
victim on tuesday lots of people want to get things going in there in the
attachment school
and with we've now applied to
hiring accounts and innovation fund to drive secure funding
to develop this and take it further and further areas mainly needs that which is
winners we're speaking
in schools working on these projects we have
and special needs projects working on these we have into the politics working
on these serious about common bringing the community together and showing that
it's is not that much of the separation
things can
