Barry crawford>>I’m Barry Crawford, HR Manager
for Impact Arts and I’m responsible for recruitment and selection for the company.
For interviews within Impact Arts it’s usually a panel interview with two people on the panel
and we usually set the candidates a brief in terms of preparing a presentation or to
prepare for a particular question. The decision to select a candidate isn’t based solely
on scoring. I think it’s important that it’s not seen as a science because it is
about people, it’s about instinct, it’s about a feeling of how someone has done and
how they’ll fit into the company and
do we want to work with this person? I think that’s about you feel rather than based
on something like scoring. I think the impression that we have of a candidate carries right
through from that first phone call or application right through to the interview itself. What
we hope is that there are no surprises along the way, and that first impression that we
have of a candidate carries right through to when we actually meet them in person. For
a candidate preparing for the interview, obviously it’s about preparation. It is about thinking
about the company in terms of its culture and its values, and also the post that they’re
being interviewed for. That does reflect in how they should dress for the interview. If
it’s quite an informal organisation and a creative company then you wouldn’t expect
them to turn up with a suit. It’s about being themselves, being relaxed and trying
to suppress your nerves as much as you can. We understand that the interviewee is nervous,
but what we hope to see is those nerves subside once you get into the interview itself. I
think what is important is that candidates are relaxed and to be themselves. From my
point of view the best interviews are those that are more like an informal, enjoyable
conversation rather than a structured interview where you stick rigidly to each question.
The enjoyable ones are the interviews that you hope continue beyond the allocated time
of maybe an hour, that’s an indication for me that the interview was good and potentially
we’ve got a great candidate.
