[ Patrick Coleman ] You can't
overestimate his importance.

This is where F. Scott Fitzgerald
was born. And born, actually,
in one of these apartments.
[ music ]
In this building, Fitzgerald was
alleged to have said his first word.
And we're told this as if it was
an omen and his first word was up.

There were published complaints
in the SPA newsletter
that he talked too much
and he had a big mouth.

[ Lori Williamson ] This story
is from 1911 and it's called,
"The Room with the Green Blinds".
Written by, it says Scott Fitzgerald.
But we know it's
F. Scott Fitzgerald.

[ Patrick Coleman ] When he
got the letter, he ran out here
onto the street and he stopped
people and cars driving up
and down and told them
that he is a published author.

[ Lori Williamson ] This one is
actually dedicated to us!
It says for the Minnesota Historical
Society from F. Scott Fitzgerald,
New York City, June 10th, 1920.
This is the one that he wanted to
finish to prove to Zelda that
he had a legitimate career
and they should get married.

This is a copy from 1925 of
the Great Gatsby, the year it was
published. It's not the very first
printing of it and obviously
it does not have a dust jacket,
but if there's anybody out there
in the world who'd like to
give us one of those,
we would be really appreciative.

[ Patrick Coleman ] He liked to
define himself as an
Easterner, but it's so clear
all of his Midwesternisms.
[ Lori Williamson ] He left and he had
a whole other life, but he kind of
kept coming back either through
his stories, or actually to visit.
I think he definitely made an
impression on him and
kind of formed who he was.
