There is a fundamental shift in Australia today in the way people are communicating
and for businesses, reaching their local consumer has everything to do with harnessing this
shift. Knowing how to fuse local advertising with mobile phone marketing is now vital for
business owners.
The phone has become an extension of the individual; kids are texting back and forth, and over
50% of all social media interactions happen via mobile phones.
The statistics are staggering. Mobile internet penetration in Australia reached 50% last
year.
People are using their smartphones and no longer go to a computer to get the information
they need. The web is now coming with them in the form of a smartphone. You won't see
anything other than smartphones in about a year. It really is the intention of most to
have a smartphone.
So what exactly are these smartphone users doing with the devices? It is interesting
to note that the most utilized mobile activity is searching local maps, places and directions,
followed by downloading music, accessing news and weather information, then instant messaging.
Accessing maps and directions continues to increase enormously. And Google is envisaging
that more internet searches will be done on mobile phones than on desktop computers by
2013.
For businesses this means that there are people on the move, in the local area, looking for
their product or service! How crucial then that businesses are at the top of the search
on sites such as Google Places for their keywords.
Research points to mobile as more effective than more traditional channels such as television,
radio, print and online advertising. In fact, mobile is moving forward in such a way that
it is a powerful standalone marketing channel.
