Jennifer: I'm going to turn it on. Ok?
We don't know what it will sound like. It might sound like "beeps"; it might sound like "buzzes".
But? the first thing I want you to think about is the volume. Is it loud, or is it soft?
Ok?
You ready?
Denise, can you hear me? Is it loud, is it soft?
Is it beeps?
Denise: It's a little soft.
Jennifer: Ok.
Ok, Denise, I turned it up just a little bit. Is it still soft? Does it need to be a little bit louder?
Denise: It's still soft.
Jennifer: Ok
Denise: I sound very weird!
Terry: That's because you have a southern accent. (laughter)
Jennifer: Ok, I made it a little bit louder. Is it still on the soft side?
Denise: Just a little bit.
Jennifer: Ok! I'm going to turn it up a little bit more.
Denise: I sound really southern!
Jennifer: What else does it sound like?
Does it sound very mechanical?
Does it sound like beeps? Does it sound like voices? What does it sound like?
Denise: I can hear your voice? the different pitches.
Jennifer: Ok. Good!
Denise: I don't know if that's how you really sound, though.
Jennifer: I don't know how I sound through a cochlear implant either.
Jennifer: How is the volume? Is it soft, medium, loud?
Denise: It's just right? right now?
Jennifer: It's just right? How does your husband sound?
Denise: Say something?
Terry: How do I sound? Do I sound southern? Or just you?
Denise: I can? I don't hear you as well as I do Jennifer.
Terry: That's because I was talking normal. Let me talk louder. How do I sound now?
Denise: You sound southern too! (Jennifer laughs)
Denise: But your voice sounds different than hers?
Jennifer: Good!
Denise: I hear your voice - better than I hear your voice.
Terry: Mine's deeper.
Denise: But at least you don't sound like "Mickey Mouse"! I was really afraid of that.
Jennifer: Really? I'm going to let your children talk to you, and see how THEY sound.
Chris: How's it goin'?
Denise: Can you say that again?
Chris: Um? How do I sound?
Denise: You don't sound like I remember?
Chris: Is that good or bad?
Denise: (crying) Your voice has changed...
You sound grown-up!
Jennifer: Denise, as you continue to listen with the implant, the voice qualities will also change.
Ok? Um? certainly that this 3 minutes worth of listening thru a cochlear implant, the fact that the voices sound "different" is VERY good!
Because a lot of people tell me that all the voices sound the same. That there's no big differences.
Denise: I can hear a difference in everybody's.
Jennifer: Good! That's good! Very good!
How do you feel the words are sounding? Are the fairly clear?
Denise: They run together just a little bit, but I can?
'course I'm watching your mouth too.
Jennifer: But in the beginning? that's fine. I'll test you a little bit later to see really what you are getting
without it. But it doesn't sound like it beeps, it sounds like voices?
Denise: It sounds a little bit? it's hard to describe?
like maybe everybody is under water a little bit?
Jennifer: Ok! Let me make a small change, ok?
How about right now? Does that make any difference in the underwater quality?
Or does it sound about the same?
Denise: I can, I can hear a difference.
Jennifer: Ok. Is it better or worse?
Denise: It's better. I sound different now too.
Jennifer: Very good. I'm gonna make your daughter talk too.
Kyersten: I love you!
Terry: You want to let Chris hold this? Denise: I love you, too!
Terry: 'course she doesn't want to be on camera?
Denise: Can you say something else?
Kyersten: Sure. Umm? you look good today!
Denise: Thank you.
Kyersten: I like you in that dress!
Kyersten: Do I sound like "Darth Vader"?
Denise: Not "Darth Vader"
Kyersten: That's good.
Denise: Your voice has changed too. I think your voice is lower than I remember it being.
Terry: You sound more like, "C-3 -PO"
Kyersten: No, I don't!
