covered jerry brown from california decided that he needed to make some
budget cuts in order to save california from this massive deficit that's facing
so as a result of course the first thing they go to is making cuts to education
funding and one of the things you wanted to cut was up three hundred and one
point seven million dollars for the powell grants program
and spreads very important specialist in to go to private schools
because it based upon their income it gives them the grants that would allow
them to go to these private institutions right so if they want to go to college
we'll have the ability to do so now of course college students in california
right happy about this so they decided to uh... go to the capitol building in
sacramento
and julia rally in a protest
uh... against it opposing this and believe it or not they were very
successful idea suddenly decided to vote this part voted down reject add this
legislation florida zero uh... so
there will not be any cuts in the cal grants program which i'm very very happy
about it i feel so proud of these college students who actually took a
stand against this maybe go into detail in the article about the fact that this
uh... as you mentioned disproportionately helps people low
income uh...
and minorities as well they say that students at the university of redlands
uh... who get these grants fifty one percent
are minority students and one uh... school administrator from the university
of redlands said that this would cut out if these cuts it happened it would cut
about twenty three percent of their undergraduate student body in the
college of arts and sciences so this would have been a pretty devastating set
of cuts
definitely an
i feel like especially students in california they have been completely
assaulted when it comes to higher ed and they've had their tuition increase
they've had programs cut ideapad their i've grants taking away their student a
taking away so stevens in california i feel like have been largely complacent
until now and now they're like yet
we're not going to take any more
and you know there are protest in the tuition hikes they're protesting all
discussed in they're being successful at it so the reason why we're bringing you
this story today is because what you have a voice ok even though doesn't seem
like it sometimes we still live in a democracy and if you protest certain
things if you disagree with certain things you have a voice that will be
heard he's got a scream louder than everyone else the the thing to bear in
mind in the wake of this success that they have is that this is not
based solutions to the problem that they're facing this is a stop-gap
yes they were to cut three hundred and something million dollars that money's
going to be cut from something it's gonna come out of some program
this doesn't solve the problem this helps the students temporarily but they
still need to find a way to raise the money
to make up for the budget problems a california sounding definitely i love
that you bring that up because you know one of the things that i did mayor of
the earned us out
a lot of credit for
is that he's taking a stand against prop
which basically makes it nearly impossible to raise property taxes and
he's saying look we need to collect more property taxes were facing a severe arab
budget shortfall and we gotta do something about it i'd so he's been very
vocal about it and it's not a popular thing to do ok as you can imagine uh...
people don't want another property taxes increased okay though especially in the
wealthy that pain like nothing in property taxes here in california
so um... we'll see what happens with that but
keep you know there are politicians in the state that are trying to do the
right thing and we know will using revenue
instead of cutting funding for education important social services
