Hey everyone, today you may have all read the news post on the RuneScape homepage about
Jagex potentially releasing a separate 2007 RuneScape server. The last full RuneScape
backup that Jagex found was the version of RuneScape from August 10th, 2007, and are
thinking about implementing it as a separate server due to all of the feedback and publicity
that the petition and forum complaints got. Now most of you are probably excited that
this 2007scape server is most likely going to happen, but most of you haven't thought
about the positives and negatives of what this actually brings. Lots of people jump
into something without taking a step back and thinking about it entirely, such as the
vote to bring the wilderness and free trade back. Most of you saw that and immediately
clicked yes, but didn't realize that it would also bring many problems such as; more gold
farmers, botters, gambling games such as flower hosting and more. So before you go and immediately
vote Yes on February 15th, 2013 to bring a separate 2007 RuneScape server to the surface,
I just wanted to list all of the positives and negatives that I could think of and gathered
from multiple peoples perspectives and some additional information about these servers
that you may have not thought about or know at all. I've been doing my research and wanted
to make sure I looked at the positives and negatives from all different peoples standpoints.
Jagex's, Current RuneScape players, and players who quit because of the EoC.
So first let me start with the positives.
Positives:
-Nostalgia, you can play the version of a game that you grew up with, that you loved
and had a lot of memories on. Everyone is nostalgic. I have nostalgia, you have nostalgia,
and anyone who is litening to this has nostalgia. Who wouldn't want to re-visit the old graphics
and the old style of the game? I'd certainly love to go to the magic trees dressed up in
my favorite outfit and cut logs with my friends again. It would be a blast and it would bring
back tons of good memories. Whips being 9m, Dragon chainbodys being 30m, the best outfit
in the game being Full dragon with a santa or white partyhat, glory, legends cape, cooking
gauntlets and desert boots, barrows armor being the best, and many other things that
I'm sure you all remember. Nostalgia is one of the main reasons people want these servers,
because it will allow them to relive their childhood and play a version of the game that's
familiar to them.
-The old combat system. Obviously this is the main reason why people wanted a different
server and the reason why this movement started. Everyone who wanted the old combat back will
now be able to play the game with the old combat system, but not technically within
the live game. Yes it will be RuneScape hosting it and not a private server, but it won't
technically be the actual game. So you'll be able to use special attacks and attack
without having to use abilities like most of the players who quit wanted back.
-Less people complaining. At the moment, there's a lot of people complaining because they don't
like the EoC, because there's bots, gambling, etc etc etc, the normal complaints you hear
every day. Bringing these servers in will most likely make all of the people complaining
be quiet. They'll have their separate servers to play the game that they want to play and
they don't have to use the EoC or worry about microtransactions. So for at least a month
or so, complaining will be at a minimum, on the forums, on social networks and on videos.
-Bringing more players to the game. this update will definitely bring more active players
to RuneScape, although they're not going to be playing the live game, it will still increase
revenue for Jagex and RuneScape.com and will expand the player base.
-Jagex will be profiting. Jagex will make a lot of money from these servers and from
people coming back and buying membership, so that might cut down on microtransactions
in the live game or better yet, have more funds to put into the live game. Since they
have a backed-up version of the old game, they don't have to spend any development time
on it or any money to remake it, so Jagex is pretty much purely profiting off of these
servers, which could definitely expand the lifetime of RuneScape.
Now here are the negatives.
Negatives:
-A divided community. Most of you say that these separate servers will renew the community
and bring it back to the way it was. Like I said in my opinion video, it won't. The
community is divided at the moment, with people who like the EoC and currently play, and people
who don't like the EoC and quit. With this 2007scape server, the people who don't like
the EoC and quit, will be playing on that server and will still be divided with the
people who play the current live game. Yes there will be a lot more active players playing
some form of RuneScape off of RuneScape.com, but that doesn't mean the community won't
still be divided. It will be two completely different communities which overall could
be detrimental to the current game.
-Less time spent on actual game updates. Everyone says that it won't effect the live game, and
that there will be a separate team to update that server for the 2007scape updates if 750,000
people vote yes, but it will still slow down the progress the actual live game could be
making. All of the people who will be assigned to update those servers could be used to develop
new content and progress the live game more. It won't necessarily take away from the live
games updates, but it could slow down some of the content that we really want such as
brand new epic bosses and new epic quests just so that the other server has God Wars
back or some other update.
-Diminished accomplishments. If they add hiscores into the 2007scape server package, it will
diminish the accomplishments of the live game players. You can argue that atm accomplishments
such as the Completionist Cape, Max Cape, 200m stats, or even just a 99 skill are already
diminished because of how fast the experience rates are now, but if you add a hiscores feature
into a separate server, which hiscores means more? Would SUOMI be the #1 player for RuneScape
if someone else is the #1 in the 2007scape server? If more people play the 2007scape
version than the live game version, does that mean that the 2007scape version is the main
version of the game and the hiscores on that are what matter? Basically, anyone who worked
hard for their stats, even before the experience rates became easy, will have a diminished
sense of accomplishment. RuneScape Classic currently has no hiscores, so why would they
add a hiscores to the 2007scape server? This could become a big negative because it would
become a war between the two servers and the players within them.
-Higher cost for an older game. This one's specifically for the players who want to play
the 2007scape server. I'm crossing my fingers for all of you who want this separate server
to hit the 500,000 or 750,000 yes votes, so that you don't have to pay extra, but if you
do, you do realize you're paying the current membership fees with the addition of either
$5 or $15. So in total you're paying around $20 to play an older version of the game that
doesn't have a running economy and possibly no updates.
-More problems, meaning botters and gold farmers. I don't know how some people can say that
there won't be botters or gold farmers on these servers, because there 100% will be.
Until the BotWatch and BotNukes are implemented into the 2007scape server, which might not
actually happen, people are going to bot to level up their skills faster, gather resources
faster, and start up an economy faster. Those who are botting are most likely gold farmers
as well, so the money they make will all be sold to the players who are looking to buy
the first set of Rune that's made or the first Whip that's cycled into the game since many
of you would be playing those servers and wanting those items.
Now these aren't a list of positives or negatives, but I just wanted to share some of this information
with you all because most of you might have a misconception of what you think these servers
will be and will contain.
First of all, you will be starting from scratch. Jagex already publicly answered that in the
Q&A on the forums. That means your account, as well as everyone elses will start at combat
level 3, and a total level of 32 because there will be 23 skills and you start with 10 hp.
Also, that means your bank will be wiped. Everyone will start fresh and you'll have
to rebuild an entire economy. Most of the people who started playing RuneScape in 2006-2007
didn't realize that when they joined RuneScape, the game had already been running for 3 or
4 years. Within those years, the players and botters, if there were any of those at the
time, I'm unsure because I didn't play all the way back then), had already built an economy
for everyone to start with. People had killed tons of monsters that drop coins such as Cows
and Skeletons, or selling items they found to the general store to create a money circulation.
There was a surplus of Rune Essence to train your Runecrafting and make runes, there was
a surprlus of logs so you can train firemaking, there was a surplus of food so you can easily
heal yourself in battle, and there was a surprlus of armor so that you can protect yourself
from other players and monsters. When this 2007scape server is released, you'll have
to rebuild an entire economy, which depending on how many people will be playing on the
servers and contributing to gathering resources, could take anywhere from a few months to 3
to 4 years. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because it could really bring those 2007scape
server players together and make a bonding and helpful community, but I'm just saying
that you won't instantly be able to boss, train, PK, have armor, have the best weapons,
etc. You're starting from complete scratch, as if this game had just come out.
Second of all, for anyone who was confused by the main page news post, or if you didn't
read the Q&A on the forums, for the players who enjoy the live game and currently play
it, you will not be charged extra to continue playing the way you play. However if you want
to play the 2007scape server, you will have to pay an additional fee of either $5, $15,
or no additional fee depending on how many yes votes the poll gets. You will have to
pay the normal membership and be a member for the live game with the addition of a cost
to play those servers if you would want to play them. So once again, players who are
playing now and have no intention of playing the 2007scape servers, you will not have to
pay anything extra, for those of you who do, you will have to pay extra on top of what
you already pay.
and lastly, here is a list of things that won't be included in the 2007scape server.
Now these were all compiled from the news posts from the RuneScape home-page after august
2007. The list was posted and made by a reddit user by the name of captainmeta4 or the YouTube
username of Capnmetaphor, I asked him if I could use his compiled list in my video and
he said sure. So let me read off what won't be a part
of
the 2007scape server.
Now that I listed the positives and negatives for these 2007scape servers, and listed what
will not be included within them, I hope you can make a logical decision when the poll
is released and not just immediately click yes because of nostalgia. I'm not sure if
I will be voting yes to this poll or not, I haven't decided, but I wanted to carefully
list everything out in a logical and factual matter and look at it from everyone's view
point. Remember, this is a really big update and decision that can impact the game in an
extremely positive way or an extremely negative way, just like the poll to bring back the
wildy and free trade, so think before you vote.
I hope this video helped some of you see both the positives and negatives in this situation
and I'll talk to you guys in the next one, later everyone.
