in this fancy stitch combo i'm going to show you how to work a stitch called the corded
rib.
and i'm always on the lookout for stitches that tick all the boxes i like for stitch
combos, which are, they are pretty on both sides, and the stitch doesn't curl.
and this one even has another feature.
it doesn't curl, but it is also essentially a two by two rib, meaning there is a lot of
give to it.
and you can use it in a flat piece, like a scarf, but the give will also allow you to
use it in cuffs or anything that you need to be stretchy.
like sleeve cuffs, hat bands, whole hats, whatever.
let's go ahead and take a look at the stitch.
you see here it is sort of a two by two rib.
these two are the knit stitches, one side is a really strong and prominent knit stitch.
and the other is kind of a vine running up zigzag.
and the purl stitches, the "purl" stitches, kind of in quotation marks, are also really
different looking between the knit stitches.
and it's flat and not curling, and the other side is identical.
which is great! great scarf combination.
and here i have it knit in the round.
umm, i knit up this little sample to make sure that the instructions i wrote for knitting
this in the round were going to work, and they do.
and as always, the instructions for working this stitch are in the video description field,
just below the video.
i'll also give you a link here on screen to my website, where you can see the instructions
for this stitch.
okay, i have a little sample here, and i'm ready to demonstrate how to do this.
i have cast on a multiple of four stitches, plus two.
and when you're knitting this flat, the first stitch is always in garter stitch, and it's
knit.
and the next stitch is ssk, which stands for slip slip knit, and it's a one stitch decrease.
i slip the first stitch as if to knit, i slip the second stitch as if to knit.
i take the tip of my left needle, put it into the front of those two stitches, wrap it and
pull it through, decreasing by one.
[cough]
excuse me.
then the next stitch is, we're going to increase back up to the right number, i'm going to
do a Make 1.
and i'm going to find the bar between the two stitches, and it's right here.
i'm going to pick it up with my left needle from the front to the back.
and then i'm going to knit it through the back loop.
to get my needle in there, i like to put my needle through the front loop, and then roll
it over.
and i'll show you that again.
then i'm going to yarn forward to purl two.
that is the pattern repeat.
i start with an ssk.
slip as if to knit, slip as if t knit, knit those two stitches together.
and then do a make 1.
pull up the bar between two stitches, put it on the left needle from front to back.
and then knit through the back loop.
and then purl two.
if you need a slow demonstration of either the ssk, and or the Make 1 Left, i'll give
you links here onscreen and in the video description below, to my videos that really focus on those
stitches.
ssk, make 1 left, purl two.
and then the last stitch is just knit.
and every row is identical, so you turn your work and do the exact same thing.
i'll tell you, if you commit to making a scarf or a shawl or anything out of this stitch,
it is great practice for ssk stitches, and make 1 stitches.
you'll be working them like a pro!
good luck.
