Grayson Veterinary Hospital. This is Debbie speaking, how may I help you?
Yes, okay hold on just a moment.
Hey, this is Dr Tollerick
Well I, you know, the client that came in,
she kinda started talking about that
and I, you know, I wasn't gonna get in the middle of it
I mean she, she brought me a 5 year old dog I've never seen before.
You know I guess she doesn't have any money.
Hell I don't think anyone's ever seen this dog before. And uhh...
you know I spent a lot of time talking with her
and... the
just with what I'm seeing on the dog on this physical exam
it's highly unlikely we're gonna be able to do much to help this dog
I mean he's, he's very very sick
The dog, I don't know, you know we threw out
possibly heart worms could explain all this
If he, if this dog...... you know most
most of the dogs, 95 percent of the dogs
that we treat for heart worms, they don't have any clinical signs.
I mean we pull a blood sample, hey he's got heart worms.
You know, we treat they do fine.
The ones that come in, like this guy, there's every chance in the world you'd kill him trying to treat him.
And that's just one of the possibilities I threw out to her. This could be heart worms.
he could have, he's a fairly young dog, but he could have a tumor in his abdomen.
He's got a hugely distended, uh distended abdomen.
and... you know I
she didn't have any money to do anything. We did, we had an exam fee and
we did a fecal, and you know, she said she could come back in a couple days and
you know we worked up an estimate for starting some blood work on this guy basically
but again I tried to express to her that,
this little puppy dog's not- you know I gave her a great prognosis
I just don't know if anybody can, can help this guy out
just based on what I'm seeing. But I wouldn't- that was kinda her thing
she said something about, you know, she was gonna work towards raising some money or whatever
but I...
I just wasn't gonna get setup in the middle of it.
Oh well this sounds like a scam to me.
I mean she, she brought this dog in yesterday and again, this...
this dog has problems, I just
I don't know that its lungs. Again I means heartworms
or an abdominal tumor are the 2 things that are most likely, and I don't think he's gonna do well
I guess I'm steering way way from all this
They didn't mention to me that this dog had been anywhere else.
She sort of led me to believe that it was her dad's dog.
and she was kinda on the phone I guess talking with her dad a little bit.
He didn't really say anything. I didn't know if that was the brother, boyfriend, I don't know
who that was. The girl is the one who I kinda talked with.
It was a woman that came in yesterday
She was fairly young, you know
maybe 19-20.
Yeah, I don't know anything about that. Again he didn't say much
he never expressed to me that it was his dog. And I think I'm remembering it right
somewhere in there I thought she said "I need to call my"- she told me it was her dad's dog, I know she did.
And she got on the phone like she was talking with her dad.
so I don't know, I don't know if the person you saw
may have been her dad, and the person who came in with her was somebody else.
but yea I didn't quote her any kind of price like that. I mean I told her we'd be spending
about two hundred fifty dollars doing some diagnostics
I don't know where she got that-
I got a quote for you hold up. It was $260
I don't know. My estimate for doing some blood work
or doing some X-rays was $260
Let me put my specs on. Yea
two hundred sixty dollars and twenty five cents.
I don't know what's going on with that. To be honest
Here somebody's bringing me a 5 year old dog
I've never seen before, that from what I can tell has never had any
veterinary care, and all of a sudden they don't want to take responsibility
they want somebody else to pay their way is what it sounds like.
But yea what you're describing to me is
getting way beyond that.
I don't know. I'm not
collecting money for it, and you know they come back in and have some money
and they wanna blood work him up
yea I'm not in the middle of the fundraising
and from what you're telling me I'd be VEERRRYYYcareful
that this whole this isn't just a... The dog exists,
but that this whole thing isn't
a scam to put some money in their pocket to be honest with you.
Again, I just worked up an estimate
for diagnostics and again, I made it
I feel like I made it pretty darn clear to them
nobody can save this dog.
He's got some problems. You know he might, I think I
I wrote em a scrip for a little bit of Lasix to see if that would pull some of the fluid
off of his abdomen, some things we can do to kinda
make him comfortable, and maybe clinically help him.
But as far as finding a CURE for this dog, my
suspicion is that's gonna be very unlikely
so...
But yea is this just like a, is it a certain website?
Now what is that? I'm not familiar
Okay
Let me get a piece of paper here.
Tell me again what the website is?
Go fund me.... And is that one is, is that THEIR website?
Yea I don't know. Hey.
If they can get someone to help them out financially I guess that's wonderful
but I'm not sure where they're getting those
money figures.
You know. You have a dog that has cancer
goes up to Georgia and goes through chemotherapy and
end up spending that kinda money. But I hadn't discussed that.
You know I just hadn't gotten that far with em, and uh,
we was simply talking about doing some diagnostics and having them around 250
Yea I guess it would upset me if, you know you said you'd seen
xrays and found it somewhere else
I examined the dog I guess but I,
I don't... You know...
They own the dog and should've had some level
of responsibility long before now, and again I'm just assuming.
They didn't tell me anything about the dog had been under vet- they didn't know about heart worm preventative
they didn't know anything about the dog, clearly as far as its medical history.
I just assume the dog's never been to a vet.
He has to get that through a veterinarian, or have a prescription for it
and I guess my question woule be well why didn't he take the dog to that veterinarian?
You know why am I seeing him for the first time? I've never seen these people before.
They got a 5 year old dog and they didn't
say "Hey we just moved here from California"
I asked him was the dog from Georgia? Has it always been in Georgia?
They said yea. They didn't tell me they were new to the area.
I just, had the distinct impression, the dog had been here all this time,
and its, never been to a vet.
So anyway I don't, I'm not involved
in anything beyond giving her an estimate on what it would take to do some
work up on this dog.
And it'd honestly be unlikely, he's, it's unlikely
that uh,
he for sure does not have an easily fixable problem
and to me, its unlikely that he's even got something that can be fixed.
You know, whether is heart worms or whether its a tumor in his abdomen, that's my 2
rule outs and neither of em, if its heart worms
and he's in the shape that he's in, I doubt
he'd survive treatment for it.
If it's a tumor in his abdomen, again you start
most of those dogs have a,
poor outcome. So...
Anyway but yea I'm glad you called. She told me they were thinking about doing this fundraiser, and I'm like
that's fine, ya'll go do what you wanna do, but I didn't,
she didn't say anymore than that to me, and I'm not
involved with nothing relating to that.
I mean, see I guess I have
I tend to work with rescue groups that are
non profit organizations
and you know, something like that comes in I may get in touch with them and they may
decide to, you know, take on that
obligation or whatever but I don't.
I just got a feeling that, this dog isn't gonna get healthy
That's just my gut feeling. I didn't run any diagnostics
but he's, it's not a simple case, whatever it is, it's not a simple case.
Yea no I don't
I've certainly had people come in "Hey I'm bringing my dog in, call
this person. They're gonna pay for it." Get the credit card number, yea i've done stuff like that but
as far as me starting a fund and sitting her collecting money
i'm not involved in that. So.
Okay? But I just, it just sounds
a little bit funny to me.
The dog came in and he was friendly
I gave him a treat and he sat and he came up, licked ya, and then when I kinda went and touched his abdomen he
growled and stuff so we had to end up muzzling him. And uh,
I guess I appreciate, his abdomen was a little bit tender, but.
But, you know I gave him a little bit benefit of the doubt
since he, like I said I'm sure- this dog's stomach was huge!
It was so distended. I mean it was....
Yea I just saw him yesterday
Yea yesterday was Monday I saw him yesterday.
this this.... you know I don't know what to tell ya I just...
I don't know what's.. I'd be leery of the whole
thing.
No no he was fine with that and again I gave him a little bit of the
benefit of the doubt. I mean he was real friendly when I walked into the room
Like I say he took some treats from me, let me pet him and all that
but when I kinda went to palpate his stomach he right away kinda started growling.
And you know hey, that kinda stuff happens but, you know
we ended up having to muzzle him. He uh.. Anyway. Anyway..
He was fine you know I mean, I don't know where you're going with that question I mean
he's not a dog I'd feel comfortable bringing home and around my kids
or something like that. No offence.
I don't know what that leading up to, as far as his temperment.
Oh, ok. Yea when I walked in the room he walked up to me, and you know, looked at me and I got a treat
for him and he took that and he let me pet him, and
it kinda surprised me a little bit when he did do the growling when iu went to palpate him cuz he'd been really friendly
up until that. And again I'm sure his belly hurts a little bit.
Oh that they just found the dog or something
I suspect its their dog, and I suspect they're, again wanting somebody else to
pay for what should be their responsibility and if they can make a little bit of money on the side
hey that'd be good too. That's what it sounds like cuz you know the numbers
you're talking about. I didn't talk with them anything about that kinda stuff, those kinda numbers.
Yea. Okay?
If you find anything else out
or something let me know. I just, sounds like something to be leery of.
