My involvement in the wine world began to wake 1993
when I started studying here agronomic studies in Madrid
in the School of Agricultural Engineers
It was a world that had always interested me.
As a consumer, I am still quite interesting from that point
And then after the university I was taking a
specialization in certain subjects
and the world of wine started to become more interesting to me.
There was also able to acquire a few parcels
with few partners in Rioja
and while we were studying
we started a small project in the world of wine
we have tried to materialize after the year 2004.
When I fihished the engineering studies in agronomy
I thought I needed a little more training expanded
and specifically in the wine world
and then studied oenology in a postgraduate
and what better place to do it in Spain than La Rioja?
and I was near to the project that we were throwing.
Difficulties, first in the field,
had to transform a vineyard that was not in the best conditions
and continue working on it
and then, the main battle in which all the wineries have to fight is the market.
The current market in the world of wine, both nationally and internationally.
This is where it should be heavily involved and rely on what you do
and if you have a product you think is quality
and trust what you do and defend it, we all have a place in the market.
Although today it is more difficult for new wineries, made a place
Avoid the consumption of labels that are in the world of wine
More than wine, there is much consumption of labels
and we will fight against it with our best weapons that is the wine itself.
Our project is a classic vineyard in Rioja,
basically the tempranillo is the variety that we grow more
It's already added small parcels of Graciano, of Mazuelo
and a bit of grenache.
Personally are varieties that I like to work,
is what has always existed in Rioja
and it's what I think is best suited
the climate and ground of the region.
I am not very friend, not because I have nothing against them,
to introduce foreign varieties
but I think that, commercially, defend yourself varieties
typical of your region, it helps.
With regard to ground, there is variety, thank God, there is variety.
This allows also have some authenticity
and diversity in the wines produced.
There are more predominant grounds where the sand clay and vice versa,
There is more silt grounds, there are varieties.
Depending on the ground, we have different options.
I do not believe in the monovarietales of tempranillo
in La Rioja which is the area that I know more
by a personal decision.
I like wines that have enough acidity
and tempranillo is usually a grape that has
,except for very rare cases, a fairly medium acidity.
Then, the Graciano, Mazuelo, are much more hardy varieties,
perhaps less noble that the tempranillo,
that variety is very noble but fairly neutral.
No highlights for essentially nothing, from my point of view.
So what help the tempranillo
is to provide a little more structure, acidity, tannin,
to a more complex wine.
And for that I am an advocate of these varieties.
I do not think that makes a wine never 100% tempranillo.
I do not want to imitate anybody,
You can try wines from around the world
but we must not imitate anybody
Among other things, because maybe you like a wine from an area
but it is irreproducible in your area because the variety is not grown
or the climate is different.
The terroir, the french word terroir, defines everything that surrounds the vineyard,
including any biological activity, organic
and cultural through the man, because it is different.
So, it looks like someone I think is a mistake,
you have to try to identify you.
And as a consumer, I like wines from many different places.
I like a wine when I taste and a light switch on.
A tic that says, here is something.
Any wine that is well done honestly
and express the place from where is, then I like it.
We can talk about areas. Burgundy with its miseries and its bounties.
There are amazing wines in Burgundy and wines that are not so much good
and taking advantage of some great names such as Burgundy
to be sold.
The area of Piedmont, Barolo with Nebiolo,
Similarly, there are huge producers that I passions.
Perhaps the two areas are where you find a good wine
are those that excite you.
In Spain, Rioja should be at that level,
there are large La Rioja wines historically.
I will not go into topics of brands,
but there are real wonders.
A good Monastrell ... the question is to enjoy.
The other day, for example, I was drinking a Greek wine
and the truth is that it was very good.
In addition, it is not just the wine itself,
I think enjoy wine is not only the wine, it´s the moment,
the company, the environment,
your mood, is a collection of things
and the wine is an accompaniment more.
About The Sarmiento Group blog,
we are a group of fans we met
through the website Verema
and we decided to get together from time to time
enjoy some wine and chatting
on this world that is our hobby, passion or as one likes to say.
We publish the various activities we do,
and the blog is pretty good
for those who want to start
and see what they think from a wine fan.
And Baba o'Wines is a blog that I started not long ago
with the aim of reflection
on different aspects surrounding this world of wine
and try to open a new discussion forum
through the responses that I may be doing
and that I attempt to answer when my time will allow me
and when I know the answer.
Create a new forum for debate on the world of wine.
Any activity, whether through the network
or any other means to try to spread the culture of wine
to me as an amateur I think it's great
and as a professional in this sector seems to me better.
The good thing about the wine blogger , from my point of view,
is when those who write are amateurs.
They give their opinion, you can be in agreement or not,
and no more than establishing an opinion or a debate on certain blogs.
With regard to the view that the press may have
in quotes, specialized ...
my honest opinion is that if there are more points of view,
perhaps some journalists specializing in the wine world
adversely affected his power, in quotes, if you can say power.
There are journalists who follow a line of opinion
on certain wines,
might prompt people to think they are good wines,
I do not argue, but there are more wines.
Wines that perhaps do not speak the specialized press.
And perhaps an amateur yes.
From my point of view has the same validity
the opinion of a journalist specializing in the wine world,
of wine or food
that of an amateur who drink wine.
In fact, I like much more,
I speak from a professional point of view, that people
who consumes and pays for my wine,
values it.
