These little babies are the new road racing shoe from Newton running the Newton distance
V I've got about 85 kilometres that's just over 50 miles in them there's a lot of things
that I like because they are very Newton-y there's some things that I'm not a huge fan
of that you should be aware of if you're going to pick up a pair to stick around if you're
interested in taking a look at the Newton distance V we're going to go through all that
These Newton distance Runners are true road racing shoe by Newton they're seven ounces
just like the Newton Distance ivs they've got the same 2 millimeter drop from heel to
toe they've got the pop one system which means that these Newton distance line up Runners
are the fastest most aggressive lightest most pure road racing shoe besides the road racing
flats that Newton came out with a few years ago so these have been staple of mine for
five models of Newton distance I love them the Newton Distance lineup is a little pricier
than the average shoe they come in $155 obviously that's skews to the higher end of a lot of
running shoes out there so I think that the reason they're more expensive it's because
the construction of the sole is with a number of pieces that it takes to get that Newton
pop system where you're popping off the front of your foot encouraging you to lean forward
and run a lot more efficiently and I found that to be the case in the results of every
single Newton Runner I've ever tried and the different distance lineup finally it features
an EVA foam sole so it's very very light and the lugs on the front here are made of rubber
so they're quite a bit more durable than the rest of the foam sole if you're looking for
a longer distance Runner spend an extra $20 and get the Newton gravity in the lineup that's
meant for higher-mileage training it's going to last a lot longer if that's what you're
looking for go with that
My take on the Newton Distance shoe is that it's not perfect shoe there's certainly some
things that I wish I could be better but there's a lot that could have been worse this is all
around a very good shoe some of the things I noticed in trying it is that I really like
the thin tongue that started coming out Newton distance fours loved it because it's very
light it doesn't feel bulky I did find that compared to the Newton distance four line
up the tongue was for some reason a little bit clumsier to tuck in when I was tying up
the ship not a huge issue you just had to be conscious of tucking it into the side so
that weren't any flaps that were going to dig in and cause blisters
The mesh on this model of Newton distance doesn't seem to be quite as open as a new
distance fours but that said I didn't notice that my feet would get sweat when I was up
running in the winter in Winnipeg they were certainly very breathable my tootsies got
a little bit cold so I don't think that anyone would have any issues with this feeling constrictive
on the inside, it was very nice very breathable I liked that a lot traction on the road very
good, on the track even better these shoes are fantastic for your tempo workouts, your
track workouts your interval workouts these are meant to go fast so you're going to love
it for that what these shoes aren't great for in the never have been because that's
not what they're designed for is anything that's off roading so on crunchy snow and
crunchy ice it was okay on slick ice I was like Bambi and slipping and sliding all over
the place because you really don't have much traction from these lugs and then when you're
going over things like bike tire ruts or you're going over gravel your foot does move around
from side to side a lot on that it's not very steady because like I say that's not what
it's meant for there's an all-terrain line up the Newton has for that and then one thing
that I forgot to mention in the review of the Newton distance four which I think actually
up here is that gravel does tend to get stuck in the middle of these lugs I didn't find
it nearly as serious on these fives as I have with previous Newton models so maybe something
about the spacing of these is a little bit better. Is as Now these break in period of
these babies At the start just like a lot of other Newton distance Runners I found that
the first 10 kilometers or so it was like running on a two-by-four at about thirty kilometres
I'd say that they are were fully broken in on the sole and then it took about 50 kilometers
30 miles for the entire sole the entire upper to loosen up to the point that it's got that
really nice side to side feel all that front and back looseness where you feel like the
shoes is just moulding to whatever your foot is going over so once we get past the 50 60
kilometres 30 miles you're going to expect a very nice comfortable ride I don't find
Newtons to have a massive tool box it's a nice size but it's certainly not like a lot
of those huge toe boxes or your toes are allowed to splay like a lot of those more minimal
Barefoot traditional shoes that said I don't have any issues with any of the Newton distance
shoes I don't feel constricted or pressed because the mesh on the sides of the shoes
here on the ball of your foot it does tend to move out I had zero and I mean zero blister
issues so if you're looking at using these for Triathlon and Barefoot not going to be
an issue at all I even tried them on a long run out here in Palm Beach where I was sweaty
at the end of the run and I didn't have any issues because the inside of the Newton distance
shoes is meant for barefoot running it's meant for minimal socks it's so smooth you're gonna
love the inside of this shoe it's super comfortable durability of the shoe they're not the most
durable don't expect them to be if you find them to last three four five hundred miles
you might get it out of the shoe if you're really really efficient Runner but don't expect
this to be a massive high mileage shoe this is meant going fast on the road when you need
it now here are some things that you need to be aware of if you're coming from any other
coming from any other shoe or you're coming from the Newton distance fours because they're
not and identical shoe number one one very small thing you can tell is here but the laces
don't really have a lot of length in the Newton distance 5 I don't know why that is but there's
probably about 3 inches fewer lace than there is on the Newton distance III second thing
that you need to be aware of which is very clear is the color I call this dirty white
it's not white it's not grey it kind of just looks like dirty because so right out of the
box you don't have a really spiffy shiny shoe color Newton has always put really loud really
bright shoe color options the Newton distance V...meh?! finally here's the biggest issue
that I had with the Newton distance V when had the Newton Distance iVs I had no issues
with my foot in the end of the shoe in the Newton distance 5 however my big toe on the
right side seemed to be scrunched a lot A-race no Triathlon Kim my wife says that she thinks
that there isn't nearly as much vertical height as there is on the Newton distance V but when
you size them up and put them side-by-side you can't really notice a difference so I
don't know why there's that basically just a quarter of the size difference so if you're
looking at picking up the Newton Distance Vs 5 and you had a certain size and on the
Newton Distance iVs you might want to consider just a half size bigger it would be the end
of the world if you didn't go with that half size but you probably won't regret it if you
did get a half size bigger
So there you have it that is my take on the new Newton Distance V Road racing very very
good shoe especially if you'd like previous incarnations of the Newton Distance it's exactly
what you can expect from a Newton distance Runner very good for road racing very good
for your tempo runs very good for your speed work it's light poppy it encourages you to
run off the front of your foot have that nice neutral efficient stride like all Newton Distance
shoes distance shoes I'll put a link in the description below where you can find the Newton
distance Runner thank you very much for watching and as always Kill your next A-Race
I didn't talk a lot about triathlon specifically in this video. Triathletes run, runners run,
same thing. It's all shoes, alright seeya
