If there's a beaver in the area he is going to leave a lot of sign. He is going to build
a damn, cut a lot of trees, he is going to change the habit substantially. Once you have
located the beaver then it's a matter of finding locations where you can set traps. In this
particular small pond the best locations to set were on the damn. The beaver is going
to come along to the damn on a daily basis or nightly basis I should say and check that
damn. But is what I will do on a damn scene like this I will move the vegetation back
so you create an area where the beaver is going to have to swim into the bait. For bait
I will use, northern Minnesota beavers really like I think his favorite food is popple or
aspen. Then as far as the trap goes my choice for beaver trapping is the conibear the 330.
My preference in using the 330 is if I can get the conibear completely under the water
and put a dive stick over the top of it the trap is pretty well hidden and it makes the
beaver swim through the trap and he will get in there. I put the trigger on the bottom
rather than on the top because generally it ends up resulting in less fur damage. Again
I said I am a fur trapper so I am interested in the overall quality of the fur.
