JOEL SIEGEL: Another aspect of playing with the rods and this is one of the reasons--this
illustrates kind of why they're one of my favorite things to use it's because they're
so versatile. You have all these different materials that they're made up of instead
of just the stick, just the wood. You can see that on the bottom of the rod, you have
this kind of this rubber tip and that's just, I mean, originally, that's perfunctory, that's
just to hold the bottom of the stick together. But you know what? It makes a sound, too.
So, if you're playing along with the rods and you have that kind of mellow sound, it's
that mellow context that you're playing in, but all of a sudden, you want kind of a jolted
volume in those rimshots that we've talked about even with the front of the rod aren't
enough, you just jack it up further with the tip. You can tell that really drives a lot
of power and a lot of sound through the drum. This is kinda like having basically a mallet
all of a sudden at hand. And then, that part of the chorus or that part of the bridge is
over and you're back to your mellow sound.
