It's not known what caused the crash, but
one passenger said the train seemed to twist while taking a curve.
According to a state railway spokesman, the high-speed trains are capable of going
up to 250 kilometers or 155 miles per hour. Pictures of the cars broken in half show just
how deadly an accident can be at those speeds. (Via CNN)
NPR reports this crash comes on the heels of two other deadly train wrecks; one in France
that killed eight and another in Quebec that left 50 dead.
The BBC reports Thursday is a local holiday and many of the travelers likely were headed
to Santiago de Compostela for the festivities.
