Internships: Where to Look and How to Get Them As you are no doubt aware, unemployment rates remain high
and jobs are hard to come by. Unfortunately, that doesn't just apply to
long-term positions. Internships are also affected. While internships may be harder
to come by than they were a few years ago, there are options. Here are a few
tips for finding and landing a position in your field.
1). Talk to your advisor. Advisors are a great source for internship
opportunities within the university, Some of these positions may not be
publicly posted or available to non-students, which will give you a leg up.
2). Be flexible. The ideal internship is one that takes place
during the summer, offers a decent salary, and perfectly matches your interests.
These days, however, you may need to settle for something less than perfect.
Consider replacing one or more of your classes with a semester-long internship.
Accepting an unpaid position may mean foregoing a salaried part-time job, but
it will ultimately be worth it to gain experience.
3). Practice the interview. Do a little research on the organization or
company you are applying to. Be sure you can confidently explain why you want
to intern there.
