Amongst the greatest things the prophet [Pbuh] was concerned with during his lifetime
was the building of masjid and the caretaking of the masjid. Also the first thing he did when he reached Medina after settling down was to build a Masjid.
The prophet [pbuh] said, Shall I direct you to that with which Allah will drop your sins and r...aise your rank in Paradise?
They said, yes! Oh messenger of Allah. He said, completing the ablution during adversity,
Abundance of steps taken to the Masjid, and awaiting the prayers, that is steadfast, that is steadfast, that is steadfast.
As well, the prophet [pbuh] mentioned the state of the believer whose heart is attached to the Masjid.
He pointed out to us that one of the seven that Allah will place under His great shade on the day when there will be no other shade:
The one whose heart is attached to the Masjid. He loves the Masjid, he is fond of the Masjid.
[Etiquettes of the Mosque]
Our Prophet [peace be upon him] taught us etiquette regarding the Mosque
First, he advised us to build mosques. He said, “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build a similar one in Heaven for him.”
and in another version, he said, “Whoever builds a mosque, even if it is like a birdhouse, Allah will build a house in Heaven for him.”
Allah [swt] said, “Oh Children of Adam! Wear your best apparel to every mosque.”
When one attends prayer at any place, especially at the mosque, s/he should get ready with the finest clothing,
presentable appearance, and perfume or fragrance. It is important that one looks his best.
This is the meaning of Allah’s (swt) verse, “Wear your best apparel to every mosque”.
The beloved Prophet [peace be upon him] recommended one walk to the mosque.
One has a great reward when he heads out for Fajr (dawn) prayer while there is still darkness, while it is pitch black.
The Prophet [peace be upon him] said, “Bring good news to those that walk to the mosque in the darkness of night with the perfect light on the Day of Resurrection.”
Allah (swt) described them in the Quran, “Their light will run forward before them and by their right hands, while they say, “Our Lord! Perfect our light for us.”.”
When our Prophet [peace be upon him] walked to the mosque he would recite this prayer,
“Oh Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light on my left, light on my right, light above me, and light below me.
Oh Allah, make me light and grant me light.” Walking to the mosque, as indicated by the Prophet [peace be upon him] is like light upon light.
Allah [swt] raises a one's degree in Heaven every time he walks to or from the mosque.
when one reaches the doors of the Mosque, he feels that he is entering the house of Allah [swt].
at the door, it is sunnah to remove his shoes and place them in an appropriate place
Then, he enters the Mosque with his right foot. This is a testament to the sanctity of the house of Allah, and also a Prophetic practice. One says,
“I seek Allah’s protection from the cursed devil. In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Compassionate,
prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah.
Oh Allah, forgive my sins and open the doors of your mercy for me.”
He asks for forgiveness and mercy as he enters, so that he walks in with a clean state.
[The messenger of Allah said, “If one of you enters the Mosque, he should not sit until he prays two raka`s.”]
One must be aware that the mosque is for everyone. It is not for a select few, excluding others. This is one of the most important things to remember.
The mosque is open to one and all. All people in the mosque are equal.
This means it is not right for one to reserve a place in it all the time, night and day, where no one else can pray.
The mosque is Allah’s house [swt]. No one is permitted, no matter how important s/he is, to reserve a particular place for him/herself.
if a commoner sits in the first row of the mosque or the place of the ruler, minister, or scholar,
no one is allowed to remove that person from his place, because it is the house of Allah.
The mosque was established to connect Muslims with their Lord. Hence, it is incorrect to annoy others at the mosque.
For example, two people who chat while their neighbor reads Quran are an annoyance.
Actually, it is recommended not to recite Quran in a loud voice if it disturbs others inside the mosque.
Sometimes we find that one reads aloud, as if he owns the mosque or it was his home. This is inappropriate, as it distracts people.
If reciting Quran causes a distraction, what about other things like chatting?
I`tikaf is one of the Prophetic traditions, especially during Ramadan.
The scholars mentioned this sunnah can be performed every day. Any time one enters the Mosque, he can internally intend to perform i`tikaf.
He can do so for any length of time; an hour, half an hour, or even minutes. Whatever the duration, his intention earns him the reward and virtue of i`tikaf.
When a Muslim leaves the mosque, the Prophetic practice is to do so with his left foot.
He should say, “In the name of Allah, prayers and blessing upon the messenger of Allah.
We, in accordance to the love we have for Allah’s messenger peace be upon him, should care for mosques.
Every time we enter one, we should recall that he was very fond of them. He showed a great deal of concern, love, and attention towards them
