[music] Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
If you have sensitive skin, or just think you have sensitive skin, then
what I’m about to tell you is very important. The whole subject of
sensitive skin is very important for two reasons. First of all, people who
have sensitive skin or think that they do avoid many different potentially
useful and helpful skin care products because they’re afraid that those
products are going to irritate them or cause a rash. Second of all, most
people who think they have sensitive skin don’t have sensitive skin. They
have normal skin. I’m going to repeat that. Most people who think they have
sensitive skin actually have normal skin. So let me explain. If somebody
really has sensitive skin then their skin is frequently irritated by many
different common skin care ingredients or products. That is: frequently
irritated, many different, common skin care ingredients and products. So
when I say frequently, I’m talking about getting irritations once a month
or maybe three times a year, but not once or twice over a five to ten year
period. And when I say many different skin care products, different here
means fifteen or fifty over that five to ten year period, not one or two.
And when we’re talking about common ingredients and common skin care
products, were not talking about the secret herbal concoction that your
friend brought you form Uzbekistan. We’re talking about the things that
line the rows at CVS and Duane Reade that most of your friends can use.
Look, if you really do have sensitive skin then of course you have to be
very, very careful. But if you’ve had one or two rashes from skin care
products over a five to ten year period, that’s normal, that’s not having
sensitive skin. The bottom line here is: most people who think they have
sensitive skin don’t and really can use many different skin care products
that they’re afraid to use. But of course, anytime anybody uses a new skin
care product, they should test it in a small area for two days in front of
their ear just to make sure that they’re not sensitive to it and it doesn’t
cause an irritation.
