The day has come again, when everyone becomes silly in a custome.
Last year I kindof made a video about the same topic, but because
my videos are usually about nothing specific, this was indeed just kindof.
And among the fast cutscenes..
..the content always gets lost anyways.
As the influence of the ghosts around me..
..I figured it's time to make a proper video about this whole thing.
We all know that the end of October, beginning of November is about the dead in some form.
This thing goes back to the ancient pagan celtic times,
let's just say it was quite long ago.
The festival trinity of the the dead is called HallowMass!
In hungarian...
So the first ceremony of this HallowMass is Halloween on October 31st.
After doing some research, it turned out this celebration has everything.
Some roasted roots of the pagan celtics, topped with a little christianity,
and on the side, the salad of thousand different versions of this christianity.
Hashtag wordjokes.
It was mostly celebrated in the anglican countries.
..england for example?
In the North American territories it became popular around the 1950s.
So the ones died that year are travelling to the otherworld,
and the dead souls are visiting their living loved ones this time.
Dressing up is important cause among these ghosts
there are bad and cruel ones,
who want to get revenge for some old misunderstandings.
So we need to dress up to confuse these guys and not to be recognizeable.
Let's see what this whole trick or treat is about!
It comes from a tradition called "souling".
Back in the days the the children of poor families marched from door to door,
where they got different sorft of cookies, and
in return the prayed for the recently passed souls salvation.
Then there's the Jack O'lantern. The whole thing comes from an Irish folktale.
It's so cool I haveto tell the whole story.
Our tale starts with a drunken blacksmith, whom in front of, the Devil appeared.
The Devil asked Jack to follow him down to hell after they drink a pint of beer.
Cause Jack didn't want to go to hell, he came up with a trick.
He asked the Devil to pick an apple from his apple tree.
Woah what a trick..
The Devil of course climbed up on the tree, and while he was trying to get the apple,
Jack, knowing the Devil is terrified of it, he painted a cross on the tree.
So the Devil couldn't come down...haha what an ***.
Eventually they made a deal, if Jack erases the cross, the Devil won't bother him ever again.
Years passed and Jack died, his soul couldn't go to heaven cause of Jack's drinking problem.
That's one thing, but it couldn't go to hell either cause the Devil was still whining over the trick.
So Jack's soul stuck between the two worlds, and he asked the Devil
if he could give him a little light to find his way back to the living.
The Devil pitied him and threw a little ember in front of him,
what Jack, and now listen carefully,
put in a craved turnip!
His soul is looking for salvation with this lid up turnip ever since.
The end, genius!
So this was Halloween, the first stop on the celebration train.
The second is All Saints' Day on November 1st.
Where we honor and celebrate the known and unknown saints.
It's an official day off school and work, so wohoo.
That's all about All Saints' Day, followed by All Souls' Day on november 2nd.
We visit the graves of loved ones, we clean them,
dress them up with flowers, light up candles and lampions.
Out of all the traditions, lighting the candles is my favourite.
There's a really mystical aura around the graveyards this time,
lid up by thousands and thousands of candles.
It's a little spooky, but overall very uplifting and..peaceful.
You've been HallowMassed!
There you have it, the trinity of dead festivals, strictly touched on the surface.
Not because I got the whole thing from Wikipedia, but
cause the traditions are different and changing from place to place.
It turned out they don't even celebrate All Souls' Day here in Canada.
But overall this is the time of the year when we remember the dead.
And that how cool they were when they were,
and how grateful we can be that they were.
I think it's a very good and very spot on celebration.
Upto this point was the educational part of the video.
Before Canada I never really understood why Halloween was such a big deal over here.
I always thought it's was a capitalistic brainwash,
so the big companies could force their candies and customes to the people.
But thinking it through, this is one of the most interesting and exciting holiday of all.
Cause let's see what Halloween is about if we take out the religion factor.
Lot's of kids are running around in a custome asking for candy.
The younger generation dresses up and participates in Halloween parties,
where 90% of the girs are sexy nurses or sexy catwomen.
The good old horror movies and stories come to life.
Friends gather around to make lanterns and to drink pumpkin ***.
And in the meantime it's totally cool to scare your neighbors,
or go to school and to work in a custome.
The whole thing is frightening by not being frightening,
because everyone, the whole community is living and breathing Halloween as one.
I am personally already thinking of ways to
scare the living *** out of strangers walking by and my son's classmates.
And I know I would've been thrilled to be a part of this tradition as a kid.
Personal experiences!
I've been to two proper Halloween parties throughout my whole life.
On the first I was the Crow in the year when The Dark Knight was screening at the movies,
of course everyone thought I was the Joker.
On the second I was a random Glamrocker.
And now an exclusive deleted scene from the movie classic, A Good Day to Die Hard!
Cut, dammit the victim screwed up.
Before I'd let everyone go, like you..
Let's go through my top five horror movies that caused me the most nightmares.
Fifth is House on Haunted Hill, the 1999 version.
Umm, creepy, simply just *** creepy.
Fourth is Tremors, I think the hungarian title is "Anywhere I step, a monster appears".
I was so, ssso scared of this one.
As a seven year old, it burned in my brain.
I had to sleep in the middle of the bed,
I kept manifesting creatures that would pull the bed down in the ground.
Around the same time I've watched my third one.
The Thing, the 82 version with Kurt Russell.
But seriously, try to explain this scene to a seven year old.
It had such an effect on me I couldn't go out to the bathroom.
I was in bed and I really had to poop, but I was so scared I couldn't leave the room.
But when holding back reached it's limits, I decided to go for it,
but by that time I was so at the edge of my capabilities,
that on the way running to the bathroom...
I'm really happy I saw these as a kid
but I had some tough nights for sure!
Second one is Alien.
Rented it from the video rental store, and..done. I was done, for weeks.
And what's the solution when that happens with a kid?
Let's watch the sequel, Aliens.
Whichafter the same thing happened again of course.
I was basically an insomniac for two weeks.
Finally the main source of my nightmares is The Ring and I'm sure im not the only one.
Kudos to her, cause she was able to scare me senseless at the age of fifteen.
So this was the Halloween story, the horror movies story.
Happy HallowMass!?
