This will be a crochet kitty appliqué tutorial.
I am using four colors of yarn.
You may need additional colors if you want to add a bow or a flower,
a size I 5.5 millimeter crochet hook, and 4-ply yarn.
Once your crochet kitty is complete, what are you going to put it on?
Please share a comment or post a video response of your project upon completion
Attach a slip knot to crochet hook
take the loose end, wrap it over the main strand
Now you have a loop, take the loop
wrap it over the main strand
put your hook below the center strand back up the opposite side
This creates the slip knot
If you're familiar with the foundation single crochet
you can go ahead and work that instead of the chain
I'm going to work a chain of seven
one
two
three
four
five
six
seven
Work one single crochet in each of the next six chains
Two
three
five
six
Work two more single crochet in the same chain
two
and this is our increase.
Now, on the opposite side, work one single crochet in each of the next four stitches.
You are sharing the chain working opposite the single crochet on the other side.
That's the second... three...four, .
In the first chain, work 2 single crochet.
One, two
Instead of joining,
I'm going to work the continual round,
and I'm putting my hook right through the top of the first stitch,
working the first single crochet.
I'm going to work another single crochet in the same stitch.
Work one single crochet in each of the next four stitches.
two
three
four
Each of the next three stitches are going to be increases.
We're working two single crochet in each of the next three stitches.
So this will be the first set of two, working in the same stitch, there's one
working right in the same stitch, two,
in the next stitch work two single crochet, and this is the increase.
The reason we increase is so the sides lay down and don't' start turning up,
if we didn't work the increases then the sides would start turning up like that.
Work the last set of two single crochet, work one single crochet in each of the next four
stitches:
two
three
four
We have two remaining increase stitches to work.
This will be the first set of two in the same stitch.
Work two more single crochet in the next stitch.
Now, we're back around to the beginning.
Working the continual round so we do not have to join.
This is what it looks like through Round 2.
Round 3. We will work an increase stitch in each of the next 2 stitches, so this will
be the 1, 2.
the next stitch: 1, 2
Work one single crochet in each of the next four.
two
three
We're working increase stitches into each of the next 6 stitches.
Now, this will be the first set. One, two.
Working on the next set,
three,
five
six,
seven,
eight,
nine,
ten,
eleven,
twelve.
That gave us an additional 6 single crochet on the rounded edge
and you can see how it's laying down, nice and flat.
Work one single crochet in each of the next four stitches:
one,
two,
three ,
four.
Work an increase stitch into each of the next 4 stitches,
and if you remember at the beginning we worked the first two,
so we're working in each of the next four stitches:
two ,
three ,
four,
five ,
six,
seven,
eight.
We're finished increasing, and you should have somewhere close to 32 stitches.
If you have a couple of extra stitches, or not enough it still may work out ok
and if you find out you don't have enough stitches, then you can work an increase right
here.
Try o get it as close as you can.
Since we're finished increasing, the next two rounds are going to be individual rounds.
You want to make sure you have enough stitches so that the edges don't curl up
What we are going to do is continue around for two more rounds.
Rounds 4 and 5, working one single crochet in each stitch around
for a total of 32 or somewhere close to that number.
This is one of those forgiving projects that is going to work even if you are one or two
numbers off
I have completed rounds four and five.
I'm going to work a chain 1.
Work one single crochet in each of the next single crochet:
two
three
four
five
six.
This is the start of the ears.
Now we are going to turn and work our first decrease,
and this is by putting your hook in the same stitch, wrap the yarn over pull it through,
put your hook through the next stitch,
wrap the yarn over pull it through. there are three loops on the hook,
wrap the yarn over pull through,
and that has reduced two stitches down to one.
Now, work a single crochet in each of the next 4 stitches.
two
three
four.
Now we want to turn.
Round 3 we are going to do the same thing.
Work a decrease on the first stitch, work one single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches.
One,
two,
three
Now we will turn. Round 4 we will work the decrease the same way,
work one single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. One, two
Now we will turn. The last 3 stitches will be joined together.
We're putting our hook through the first stitch, wrap the yarn over pull it through.
Put your hook through the next stitch, wrap the yarn over pull it through.
Put your hook through the last stitch, wrap the yarn over pull it through.
There are 4 loops on the hook, wrap the yarn over pull through all 4 loops.
I like to wrap the yarn over one more time, and I'm going to cut my yarn.
Pull your yarn through and give it a tug.
I've attached the slip knot to the crochet hook. Skip one, two.
Attach your yarn in the 3rd stitch. Putting your hook through the stitch,
Wrap the yarn over, pull it through the stitch,
through the loop on your hook and you've attached the yarn, now work a chain 1.
Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 6 stitches.
There's two, three, four, five , six.
Now turn. The fist stitch will be a decrease.
Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 4 stitches:
one,
two,
three ,
four
Now turn.
Row 3 the first stitch will be a decrease.
Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches:
One,
two,
three Turn.
Row 4, the first stitch will be a decrease
Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches:
One,
two
Turn.
Now we will form the point by working a decrease on all three stitches.
Cut the yarn, pull it through, give it a tug
This will be the nose, and I'm leaving an extra long length at the start,
and attaching the slip knot to the crochet hook.
Work a chain four:
two,
three
four
Join with the beginning chain and then wrap the yarn over.
That's all there is to the nose.
Cut off an extra long length for the tail, and pull the yarn through, give it a tug
I'm going to find, right here at the center where I started, and I line it like that
And I'm going to put my crochet hook up, pull the first strand through...
now on this side, I'm going to put my hook back up,
grab a hold of the strand pull it through, like that.
Flip it over.
This is going to be on the back side, so I'm just going to tie a couple of knots,
and if you want it lying down more,
you can thread your needle and run it back up ..
see like right here I didn't get it over far enough,
so I'm going to thread my needle,
and I'm going to run it up like that.
Sometimes I can get it to lay flat, and sometimes I miss.
This time I missed, so it's just a little simple fix here...
and run it back through and I'm going to grab some down here,
some stitches and pull it back through,
and then make another knot, make another knot, and I'm going to...
use this tail and make a knot and everything is going to be on the back side so you won't
see it,
just like that, them cut 'em off ..ohhh something like that.
And that completes the nose.
My nose might be a little off center, but that's o.k.
I will be using a French knot for the eyes.
This one I used chains, which was the same way as the nose, so you can choose either
technique.
I've cut off a long strand of yarn, and I'll be using that for the eyes.
I will be using that for the whiskers too.
So, I'm going to put my needle up over here. I don't wanna pull it all the way through,
so I need to be careful. Then leaving about four inches or so.
Now ,I'm going to take and wrap the yarn around the needle.,.
loosely, not too tight, about four times, and then I'm going to put the needle in
a different place
through the stitch from where I came up.
I don't want to put it through the same place, or I'll end up putting it through.
So just pull it through.
Just like that. And this is what it looks like on the back side ,
now I'm going to go over a little bit. Right about here.
Maybe I'll go a little bit further, and pull it up to the top,
and then the line has run between the eyes on the back side.
Now I'm going to wrap the yarn around the needle loosely four times,
and work it the same way putting it back through in a
different location than where you came up, and that completes the eyes.
I'm going to turn it over, and cut off the yarn like that and just tie the
two strands of yarn together just like that and then cut 'em off.
I'm working on the whiskers.
I'm putting my needle up from the back side between the second and third round.
I want to leave a tail on the back side.
Now I'm going to go up here between the fourth and fifth round, like that.
I'm working on the second one. Now the third whisker.
Now once the whisker is complete. let me flip it over.
And cut off a little length of yarn like that and we'll
tie the two ends together, and cut off any extra yarn, just like that.
The opposite side will be worked the same way.
Now we'll flip it around, and cut off the extra yarn, make a knot
And cut off the extra tail. At any point, you can sew in the tails
on the back side or you can tie them in the knots.
It's up to you. They will all be done the same way.
Either tying in knots, or sewing them in.
I have attached the last color of yarn to the crochet hook.
Now we will be attaching the yarn to the shape. I will be working a slip stitch as the edging.
Putting the hook through the stitch, wrap the yarn over,
pull through the stitch, pull through the loop on the hook.
Put the hook through the stitch, wrap the yarn over,
pull through the stitch, pull through the loop on the hook.
Put the hook through the stitch, wrap the yarn over, pull through the stitch, pull through
the loop on the hook.
When you get to the curved section, you will want to work it a little looser.
If you work it tight, it's going to pull a little bit.
So, what you will want to do is work it the same way.
Make sure this loop is a little loose.
You can loosen it up like that.
You can see how it's a little bit longer than this one, and you'll want to do the
same thing with the next stitch.
Make sure they're not too tight.
Continue working on the round up to the ears
Now at the ears, we're working at the sides of the stitches, so there's not going to
be a clear place to put your hook,
so what you'll do is just find a place to put your hook through,
like that below one strand, and if you can find two of them that's even better.
It just makes it a little more secure.
It does not have to be below two strands, but I find that it makes it a little more
secure.
I'm just finding a place to put the hook below the stitches on the side, as close to
the edge as I can get them.
We're at the point of the ear.
This is the slip stitch you will want to work loose so it goes around the edge nice and
even and does not pull up.
Now I'm back around to the top of the head, and the stitches can be worked through the
single crochet
Now I'm working on the other ear.
And around to the beginning, and I'm going to join with the first slip stitch and cut the yarn off of the back side
To tie off these last two strands of yarn , I'm going to pull them over here like
that. And then pull this one over.
Keep in mind everything is going to be on the back side when we sew it on to a or a
granny square.
You can use it wherever you want to use it. I'm just making a knot.
Just like that, and then cut off the yarn.
And that completes the Kitty!
Now if you want to add a little more, you can put a flower or a bow.
I'm going to work a Chain of 15:
one,
three,
four ,
five ,
six,
seven ,
eight,
nine ,
ten,
eleven,
twelve ,
thirteen,
fourteen,
fifteen
I'm going to cut off the tail
pull the yarn through ,
and give it a tug
and what I'm going to attach up to the corner is a little awareness ribbon,
up in the corner of the ear, just like that.
I'm going to bring my needle up from the back side,
and leave a little bit of the yarn hanging out so I can sew it later,
and then just secure the yarn in a few different places so it can hold its' shape.
I'm going to flip it over to the back side, and tie the two ends together and cut off
the tails, and on the front side,
I'm going to leave maybe about an inch or a half inch on each end, like that.
Then I'll have a little awareness ribbon in the corner of the ear.
