OHMYGODI'MHERE!!! Aka the worst hide-and-go-seek name ever asks,
"I wanna know if females in Korea actually act cute; do grown women do the whole aegyo thing,
and do men over there find it attractive."
So first off let's clarify this grown women thing. If you mean 40 years old and up,
I'm gonna say "no". But if you mean high school to 30 something, I'm a say "yes".
There is definitely aegyo happening. Yeah, it happens.
And let me clarify what I mean by aegyo. I think that if you don't live in Korea,
your only example of it is through Korean dramas, or K-pop,
and in Korean dramas, they really ham it up. Really bad. Yeah.
Thinking of Korean dramas as an accurate depiction of Korean life,
would kind of be like thinking of North American soap operas
as an being accurate depictions of North American life.
"Simon! I'm pregnant with your baby--from the past--
and that baby is really not a baby--it's Magneto--
and Magneto was dating Spudgy, who was once a woman,
and he turned into Mystique who was---and now he is Trogdor, the Burnitator
Burninating the countryside--NOOO!! I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!!OH GOSH!
TOUCH ME! DON'T TOUCH ME! --my nose is itchy--TOUCH ME!!!
So Korean comedy and romance dramas are really slapstick a lot of the time,
and the aegyo is super duper powerful to the nth degree aegyo,
and that's not really what we see in everyday life here.
I think it could be a new superpower.
AEGYO ON! -aegyozilla- OPPA! WHHHHEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Breaks apart buildings.
In the drama vein, we wanted to talk about older women acting aegyo.
There's a really good drama depiction of this actually, in "You're Beautiful"
I WILL PROMISE YOU ZMMMBBBAAAAOOOBAB BAD DIM BAD DIM BAAAAA!!
I WILL PROMISE YOU--
BLAHH GAHH BAB SAHH BAHH-
BAHH WAHHHH LA LAAAaaaa….how come you know that song Simon?
Because you sing it all the time; I don't have a choice!
ANYWAYS, in that drama there is an aunt, and she's much older
but she wears cute bows in her hair and she tries to act in this cutest style,
and nobody likes it, everyone in the drama is weirded out.
That would be the same in real life in Korea.
You might see some older women acting aegyo after they are drinking,
and it's kind of like, cute, you know, they're joking about it and talking to their husbands,
but if anyone did that seriously, people would be totally weirded out by it.
At least we hope so. I hope so. We REALLY REALLY HOPE SO.
I'm just telling you, okay, Simon, when I'm a little old lady and 90 years old,
I'm SOO pulling out the aegyo cards.
OPPA! Martina wants….her dentures. YES!
if you watch a Korean kpop video, at least, girl groups,
You'll see a lot of face movements, like exaggerated stuff:
chipmunk cheeks, shoulder wiggles, poke-zees, and all that kind of stuff,
and, "I'm suprsied!" That kind of stuff does not happen on the streets.
That's very hammed up and exaggerated a well--
at least we hope never see that on the street--I haven't seen that but, *shudder*
There is a difference between natural aegyo, and faked aegyo,
and it's a really important distinction.
It's supposed to reveal your hidden innocence,
something that you're uncomfortable with sometimes,
at leads that's what we think of it,
but when people pretend to be aegyo, that's when we're uncomfortable with it.
when you see a girl smoking and picking her nose
and then afterwards she's like "Guy I might have a crush on!"
Then you're like…it doesn't really match well with the image that she had before.
That's exactly it. So you can't pretend to be aegyo afterwards
because then it seems really really uncomfortable and unnatural and phoney.
Now some guise actually love the aegyo style and they gobble it up
and some guise are really not into it
If you can't tell by now, Martina's a little bit aegyo in her videos,
I'm not aegyo!
And I think it's cute sometimes
but I know she's just trying to use it to be manipulative and to get her way.
I have no idea what you're talking about!
But I'm very strong willed and I will not cave into it.
Guy that I have a crush on! Can we eat pizza?!
OH YER SO SWEET!
HEEHEEEHEEHEEHEE I get the pizza every time
No she doesn't.
Ok so long story short: is there Aegyo in Korea: yes
Is it as rampant as it is in K-dramas and Kpop: no. It's a lot more subtle.
Does every guy like it? No.
Some guise hate it, but a lot of people do like it as well.
And, final point: you wish you could be as aegyo as Martina.
Older guy I like, JJANG!
[GONG!]
[Kiss and touch me, rub my bananas!]
