Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village and we are talking about how to teach your
dog a reliable stay. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit
my website at canineheadstart.com. So we are going to talk a little bit about troubleshooting.
Things are going wrong and you don’t know why. One of the most common mistakes people
make is when they are working on their stay with their dog, they have the treat in their
hand and they do this. Ursa this way… sit… yes… they got their treat and they say stay
and they start to back off with the treat in the hand. The dog will follow the cookie
and the person gets frustrated because they haven’t stayed. You want to make sure that
you give a stay, a hand signal you back off from your dog you come back and then you go
and get the cookie out. Good girl. Okay another thing that is common mistake is dog will start
to anticipate the person coming back between your coming back and releasing them and they
will get up before the persons come all the way back. So I would ask my dog to stay and
I will move off and as I am coming back the dog jumps up to get the cookie. Part of the
problem there is you are probably not reliably using your release word. The release is okay,
alright, all done whatever words you choose but the dog must hear that to know that you
are letting them get up. If this does happen, then you just simply come back put them back
in the position, wait a second, click and reward and release. Make sure you are not
forgetting the release. Another problem is that your dog might just be too excited to
work in the stay, to hold the stay position. If they are well exercised and they just excited
in general you might need to work with the leash. So you would put a leash on your dog.
Good girl… So that you’ve got your dog on a leash and if you ask them to stay and
they jump up and run away they don’t get very far. You can bring them right back. You
can step on the leash if you don’t want to have it in your hand but it gives you a
little bit of control over your dog if they are likely to just blow you off.
