What is the goal in the Pre-Core Mathematics
program?
0:00:05.000,0:00:13.066
Basically, all students need to be able to register
for a core mathematics course which is required
for their degree.
0:00:13.066,0:00:21.000
This purpose was kept at the forefront when the
Pre-Core Mathematics Program was designed…
more specifically,
0:00:21.000,0:00:28.066
The two primary goals for the program are to
prepare you for college-credit math courses and
decrease the amount of time you spend doing
this. There are three main tools that have been
incorporated into the PCM program to assist you
in achieving these goals. ALEKS – which has
0:00:43.033,0:00:50.000
already been proven at UALR to prepare
students for college-credit math courses.
0:00:50.000,0:00:58.066
Time on task – I don’t think anyone can argue
that you have to “do the math, to learn the math."
0:00:58.066,0:01:03.000
Personally as a teacher, this has been my
struggle – getting students to
consistently put the time into the math. And finally
progress in the content – to ensure students
0:01:11.000,0:01:19.000
aren’t putting in ‘empty time’ in ALEKS but are
moving forward. These tools will prepare you
0:01:19.000,0:01:24.033
for the next college-credit class. But the time it
actually takes to get there
0:01:24.033,0:01:33.033
depends completely on you. We have set a
minimum standard of six or eight hours per week.
0:01:33.033,0:01:40.000
This should allow the majority of the students to
complete the program in 2-3 semesters.
0:01:40.000,0:01:48.000
If you want to complete the program earlier, then
YOU must put in more time. It’s all up to you!
0:01:48.000,0:01:55.000
Beyond the tools of the program, a few people
have been placed in the room to help with your
progress in the content: the classroom facilitator
and classroom tutor. When you are
0:02:02.000,0:02:08.000
in class, you should be using these people to
explain the content to you. A person is
much more effective than any other method of
help because they can ask you questions to
know which path to the correct answer is
appropriate for you. You don’t have to completely
rely on the explanations within ALEKS during the
class meeting. Just ask for help!
0:02:28.066,0:02:34.000
YOU are also creating a few tools to support the
goals of the program. By creating a
notebook filled with algebra skills, you have a
study tool and reference tool for a later
0:02:41.000,0:02:48.066
class. There is also the confidence that you are
building within yourself that “you can do the
math!”
0:02:48.066,0:02:53.066
This will go along way in your college career. I
know many
students don’t like math, but you can’t say you
can’t do math after completing this program.
0:03:00.000,0:03:09.066
Success in this course is UP TO YOU! I’ve done
a presentation to a group of freshman that was
titled “Success Strategies 101”. We began by
talking about “College Success Tips"...
0:03:16.000,0:03:24.066
and the first tip was TAKE CONTROL. This is so
true in college and in this course.
0:03:24.066,0:03:30.066
You must take control of your learning. We are
here to provide support in multiple ways,
0:03:30.066,0:03:41.000
but ultimately it’s up to you. Success is in your
hands. UALR has provided computers for you in
0:03:41.000,0:03:48.066
and outside the classroom. UALR has scheduled
2 people to help you “Do your Math” in the
0:03:48.066,0:03:56.066
classroom. UALR has a free tutoring lab, the
MAC. There is an email address
0:03:56.066,0:04:04.066
(mathlab@ualr.edu) for math support which will
be answered by a tutor. You also have your
0:04:04.066,0:04:10.033
classroom facilitator’s email to ask content
questions. For each class meeting, you will
have a different announcement containing helpful
information specifically related to this
0:04:16.000,0:04:23.066
class. You will be given weekly progress reports
to monitor your path through the module in
this program. AND the redesign that your
experiencing here is based on research to lead
you to success.
0:04:33.033,0:04:40.000
BUT, ultimately, success in this course is in your
hands. So, I challenge
you to TAKE CONTROL of your learning. And
the biggest piece of advice is to get help when
you are having trouble.
0:04:48.033,0:04:58.066
Outside of class,…the best help can be found in
the MAC. MAC is just two buildings away.
0:04:58.066,0:05:04.066
They have great hours, computers, and at least
two tutors on staff to assist you.
0:05:04.066,0:05:11.066
There is also a ‘quiet room’ filled with computers
where you can ‘do your math!’
0:05:11.066,0:05:19.033
Now, it’s time for you to get busy…”take control
and do your math!” When you have trouble with
a problem,
0:05:19.033
there are two people in the room to assist you.
BUT you need to try it first. It's your math! Have
a great class.
