My name is Dr. Colleen and I'm with Petsecure pet health insurance.
This is my friend Mia here and Mia's going to help us talk today about summer safety tips.
Summer's our favourite time to go out and enjoy the great outdoors
and we want to make sure our pets are safe as well.
Dogs, especially, we want to make sure that they have access to shade, especially during the hot hours of the afternoon
and that we're exercising them early in the morning and later in the evening.
We want to make sure that they have constant access to water.
Even these small bowls that you can carry just on your belt loop work great for giving us access to water during the summertime.
When you do have concerns about your dog, you know that they can develop heatstroke the same way that people can.
Before anything like that happens, we want to ensure that we're calling our veterinary hospital or the emergency clinic.
In the event when we are concerned about heatstroke and we can't get to the doctor right away,
we want to make sure that we're not using things like ice water or cold water splashed over a dog.
That can actually make things worse for them.
We can use cooling bandanas, shirts that have been soaked in sort of tepid water
or there's cooling mats that we can buy that help to lower the temperature and keep pets feeling better.
