What do you think about the advertised intermittent fasting weight loss results?
Not eating is a sure-fire way to lose weight short term. Long term, it’s not so good.
They found that fasting improves blood sugar levels.
Of course it does, because there is no sugar in your blood.
Intermittent fasting is supposed to improve weight loss over starvation dieting.
Intermittent fasting is a starvation diet, just starving in planned intervals instead
of all the time.
You eat less on the fasting diet.
Intermittent fasting means you don’t eat anything for a while. You only lose weight
if you control your urge to stuff your face the next day.
Even if you do binge, you’ll eat less overall.
Not really. In fact, if you stuff yourself before the fasting starts as well as afterward,
you could end up eating more calories overall.
What’s the alternative?
Get moving. It is healthier to burn calories than try to restrict them.
You can not burn many calories when fasting.
That’s one reason why it doesn’t work long term. Your body becomes more efficient
with repeated fasting, causing it to gain more weight when you resume your prior diet.
If I fast after a big binge, I’ll lose the weight.
Or you’ll be like those Sumo wrestlers who gain weight by sleeping after eating, getting
fatter in the process.
Should I fast before a major get together?
You’re more likely to binge if you fast, first.
They found that Native Americans who routinely fasted reduced their incidence of diabetes.
Those that live in Mexico and live on a traditional corn, beans and vegetables diet have lower
rates of diabetes, too. It’s the American diet that’s killing them.
I thought it was the fasting.
Hunter-gatherers theoretically lived in a fast or famine cycle. It’s interesting that
those who lived that way the longest in the Southwest are most prone to diabetes and obesity.
I guess it means fasting won’t improve my health.
There’s research that long term restriction of your calories to just what you need plus
full nutrition increases life expectancy, but that isn’t with regular periods of starvation.
I’d like to live forever, but not if I feel like I’m dying of hunger all the time.
