Hello everyone welcome to your Freshman Seminar class. We're going to start things off with
an introduction, so tell me your name your major, your biggest concern about your freshman
year and why. My name is Melissa I'm a psychology major
and my biggest concern about college is making friends. I've been with the same group of
people since kindergarden and we all went different places so...
My biggest concern are the professors, they seem like they don't care if I do good or
bad. And I just don't know how to ask for help.
I don't really have any concerns, like I'll just study the night before exams. Thats what
I did in high school and it always worked so I got this.
My biggest concern is failing. When I was in high school everything was planned for
me and I have all this freedom now. My biggest concern is that I have to work
full time to pay tuition so I'm afraid its gonna be really hard to keep up with my academics.
I-N-D-E-E-E-N-D-E-N-C-E do you know what that means?!
Okay, you all have typical concerns about being here but don't worry you all can do
it, there are many resources here to help you too. So lets first talk about Melissa's
situation. Melissa you worry about making friends, that's
a typical common concern. Especially because it's such a big campus, does anyone have any
advice for Melissa? Well you can join clubs, go to all different
events on campus, you know get to know your roommates, things like that could be really
fun. Someone told me to join study groups its really helpful and you can meet different
people. Those are all great ideas, potential friends
are everywhere. Alright so what about Briana she is worried
about HS teachers vs. College professors. What can we tell her about that? Where there
is a syllabus that tells you when your teachers office hours are and my sister told me that
its our job to reach out to our professors like they have so many students, some won't
even know your name. Yes thats all very true, don't take it personally with them not knowing
your name, if you put the effort in then they'll be more then happy to get to know you and
really help you out. Okay so Alexis and Kyron, you both have similar
concerns about study skills and grades. Does anyone have any advice?
Lets say you only have two test and if you do bad on one you'll fail, so studying the
night before is not going to work anymore. theres going to be so much material.
What?! Relax everyone lets talk about the different
resources that are available for you to help. Such as the Russell Conwell Center, and your
academic coaches. Now for study skills you're gonna have to change them and adjust them
from high school. But that kind of goes along with using your time here at Temple University.
Now lets talk about Time Management, does anyone have anything to help Maria?
It feels like you have a lot more time here, in between classes. If you're here for 8 hours
and you have control over your own schedule. A planner can help if you fill it in with
due dates and stuff from your syllabus, and class time, student orbs, and stuff.
That's good guys, now lets talk about Ms. Independent. We all love the freedom that
we have now but we have to remember we're not in high school anymore, you're an adult
now you have to take responsibility for everything, mom and dad aren't here to bail you out.
Wow it looks like we're already out of time, so just remember everything that we have been
talking about and I'll see you all next week.
