For your second essay, I’m using the same rubric to grade the paper as I did with essay
1, since the focus on this class is creating effective academic essays. This paper will
most likely be less personal than your first paper, in that all three prompts require that
you look rather closely at at least one of the texts that we read. You will need to quote
correctly from that text several times, so if you’re unfamiliar with the mechanics
of quoting (what’s capitalized, how to use tags like “According to Baldwin” before
the quotations, or what punctuation to use), you should review quotation rules. I’m not
focusing on MLA citations yet, so don’t worry about the mechanics of citations—just
the mechanics of quotations. However, if you do use research, you need to let the reader
know where it came from. More than anything, for this paper I’m looking to see that you
read my suggestions on your first paper and have corrected mistakes this time around.
Simple mistakes like the lack of a good title or failure to double space the paper or have
a four line header on the left margin demonstrate carelessness at this point in the semester,
and will result in losing quite a few points. Good luck!
