So there are some designers, right now, that are truly, truly making true to the definition
"couture" and they, of course, have studios in Paris. A couple of those designers are
Channel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Christian Dior has a couture house, and they usually
make, if you notice for runway shows, each season they will make crazy ideas turn into
outfits. Very conceptual work, and the conceptual work is usually what leads to ready-to-wear,
what leads to something that's applicable in society, something where someone will go
out to dinner in. Some of the things that John Paul Gaultier puts on the runway aren't
really going to be something were you're like, "I'm going get that and take it to the park."
Unless you're gutsy. They're making couture and they have to have at least fifteen people
working in their house, their couture house. They usually, not only make it for clients,
but I think they make collections that are nothing but couture that just describe their
vision. And then, for example, Christian Dior will make Dior ready-to-wear lines based on
those conceptual ideas.
