Rebecca>> I think when we first started this program... we thought of it as a way to contribute
to Rochester. And a way to contribute to these students. What we honestly didn't fully realize
was how sensational these students were. These students, who had, many of them... most of
them... been through difficult lives... had perhaps difficult educational experiences...
nevertheless had come out very positively on the other side.
Bill>> They have enriched the community far beyond our expectations - and frankly they
have succeeded beyond our expectations. Everybody always has doubts about whether or not these
kids, who come from these really really challenging school situations in urban areas can succeed
at a highly demanding place like RIT. But these students are doing very very well, and
we are so, so proud of them.
Candice>> We make sure that they not only have access to higher education by coming
to RIT... but they are successful. Because it is okay to provide them money to be able
to go to school, but there is also things that they need to be able to be successful here.
So we provide academic coaching. We provide support. We provide them mentors.
We provide them books. We provide them with all those things that are going to make them
be on an even playing field with everyone else.
Tim>> My major is civil engineering technology, with a minor in music technology. Eventually
I plan on going into project management, and at some point starting my own construction
company. Getting the scholarship and actually getting accepted to RIT, a school of this
standard... it was a good feeling for me. Especially being the first person in my household
to go to college.
Karbara>>So I'm a 4th year, biotechnology program. There are a lot of things I can go into
There's viruses, microbiology, pharmaceuticals... so I am still trying to figure out what I
want to do, but I definitely want to get into something so I can help out in some way. So
research... anything.
Bill>> We are also trying, basically to send a message to even younger students in the
community - even the K-6 and K-9... middle school kids - telling them that if they take
a college bound curriculum and do well and are admissible to RIT then finances won't
be the thing that stands in the way of their getting a first class education.
