When you are growing vegetables in containers
the fertilizer application is very, very important.
First of all
the containers are limited
in surface area
where the plant is going to grow nutrients from.
So you have to make sure that
the plants
get the right amount of nutrients so that they can grow well.
You can buy some potting mix
that have fertilizer in them, which means the fertilizer
was mixed
with a potting mix.
Or you can buy a potting mix that does not have fertilizer in it.
So you have to make sure that
you add the right amount
of fertilizer in the potting mix
before
you put it in the pot.
For example, this potting mix we are using here
had some fertilizer already added to it
so we don't have to add fertilizer to it. So we just put it into the pot
then after putting it into the pot
and planting the vegetable
like we planted peppers here then
you have to make sure that
the plant
gets the right amount of nutrients, because whenever you water the plant
some of the fertilizer
is leaked out
so you have to replenish that.
Whenever you water the plants
on a daily basis
you need to add some fertilizer
with the water
when you are watering.
And you water them just once in a day. Then
once every week
because
some of the salts that are in the fertilizer tend to accumulate
within the potting mix in the root zone of the plant,
you need to leak
those salts
by watering
the containers with just plain water, plain tap water
once a week.
If you don't do that
then you start seeing some
nutrient deficiency symptoms in the leaves of your vegetables.
