Welcome to Pro/Con, featuring Parker Condie and Alex DeRiso.
This week's topic: fraternities at Boston College.
Hey everybody, my name's Parker Condie, I'm arguing pro.
Hi, my name is Alex DeRiso and I'm arguing con.
So DeRiso, I think that at BC we could use a good dose of Greek life.
There are many other Jesuit colleges and universities that have accepted Greek life on the campus.
And it's a facet of college that I think BC will benefit from.
I do not think we would benefit from Greek life Parker, being that frats segregate the community.
Here at Boston College you can go with any friend you make,
we can go to a house on 1789 Comm. Ave, we can go to 5 Radnor, we can go to 20 South, and everyone's accepted.
We have frats, you're only going to go where your frat brothers are.
Maybe you want to go to a Kappa Omega Kappa but you can't because you're a member of Gamma Gamma Gamma.
It just doesn't work.
Interesting point Alex, interesting point.
But how about this. For freshman at BC it's hard to go off campus if you don't know any upperclassmen.
So frats will give freshmen, for like the first month of school, something to do, people to meet, groups of upperclassmen to meet.
That is true, but then also after their first month of school frats drain the freshman's account by $2,000 a semester.
I don't know about you, but unless you're a completely repulsive person making friends is not that hard.
I'm not going to buy friends from other people, pay him $2,000 a pop every semester, just so he'll drink with me on Saturday night. I don't play that.
