Hey guys and welcome to "English Words out of a German Mouth"! Today we're gonna try
reading the English pronunciation poem which has been around for quite a while now but
there is a specialty, a difference in this video because I'm gonna use the speech jammer
app on my phone to confuse my mind even more. I'm a native German speaker so it might be
a little rough for me to hear, what, like, what the speech jammer actually does is it
plays back what you're saying slightly delayed. So it is really confusing, I tried it out
for like ten seconds, I was like "Oh, okay. This is weird" and uhm, let's see how it works
with the poem, uhm, in combination with the poem! Let's get started! English is tough
stuff Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation. I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse. I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy. Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Sword and sward, retain and Britain. (Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you With such words as plaque and ague.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery, Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Gertrude, German, wind and mind, Scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Ivy, privy, famous; clamour And enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb, Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant, Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
And then singer, ginger, linger, Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Though the differences seem little, We say actual but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer. Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific, Science, conscience, scientific.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven, Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed. Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover; Tour, but our and succour, four.
Gas, alas, and Arkansas. Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion. Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen, Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Won't it make you lose your wits, Writing groats and saying grits?
It's a dark abyss or tunnel: Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Hiccough has the sound of cup. My advice is to give up!!!
I think, woah, I can't hear *** anymore! So I hope this was fun for you, I'm not sure
yet. I'll see in the editing room. If you want a link to the speech jammer you will
find a link to a Windows program down there in the description. Otherwise just look in
the app store for speech jammer and you should find something. This poem that I read off
you will have in the description as well so look there if you wanna read that out loud
yourself! It's pretty hard I think even without the speech jammer. Anyways, thanks for watching
