Typically German: Fussball, first of all
We love Fussball
and that is
the national passion.
And we love how open the people have been
and increasingly how diverse the German population is.
It's just a fascinating
mix of folks.
I think a couple of things are typically American. So is the notion of the American dream, that anybody
can get to the top.
The American dream is alive, and well, you really can go from nowhere to somewhere
And I think the other element of that
America is, and I think quite rightfully,
so proud of our diversity.
We haven't always gotten that right
The history is uneven,
but today we flourish
with that diversity -
a diversity of all kinds.
I think the biggest pitfall in visiting the United States is the notion that you couldn't
get around to different places
quite easily and quite quickly.
It's pretty easy to do - but boy, you need time.
So the say gosh - I'm gonna go visit New York
go down to Washington. Then I'm gonna quickly run down to Florida
and then I want to see by the way see California before I get home. Those are big distances.
So the one thing I'm cautioning people is make sure your budget enough time, which is
why I think you made the long trip to really get a sense of the United States.
Our embassy is I have to say with great Stolz
and pride is quite special
It stands on property
that we purchased in 1930/1931
and obviously we had after that a war, we had a division of Berlin.
Where our embassy is today
was in so called no-man's-land. We sit right beside
the Brandenburg Gate.
And it is an extraordinary location
Many would say it's the best located American embassy
anywhere in the world!
