I am a lawyer for Norton Rose Fulbright, a law firm whose clients include companies that use natural resources. Many of our clients are leaders in this market segment.
I work in the corporate department, where I look at deals from the legal point of view, answer clients’ legal questions on natural resources use or legislation.
So we speak with clients from this industry every day. Unfortunately the trend for a fall in gold prices is continuing, and in these conditions clients mainly try to extend the time-frames for implementing their work; we help with this, in coordinating activities, and trying to help them in this difficult economic environment.
I used to work for the Canadian law firm Macleod Dixon, which in 2012 merged with Norton Rose. Then in 2013 Norton Rose merged with the American firm Fulbright & Jaworski. So we are expanding to cover the whole world, entering foreign markets, and focussing more and more on deals that encompass several jurisdictions.
We work in neighbouring countries – for example, we have an office in Almaty in Kazakhstan – and recently several deals have been made involving investors from Kazakhstan.
We are open to new clients. I have participated in Adam Smith events before, but this is my first time as a speaker. I think this Forum is important as it brings together the sector’s leaders, and allows them to discuss problems, as well as listen to interesting presentations on trends.
Especially important is the chance to learn how to move forward in this situation.
