The government should recognise the Treaty of Waitangi
in its constitutional review, says the Green Party.
However, Metiria Turei fears that this major undertaking
will be left for the National Party and the Maori Party to carry alone.
There is no NZ constitution at this time.
However, the Treaty of Waitangi has been the foundation document
for this country.
The idea for this was born with the agreement
between the Maori Party and National.
However, the Prime Minister says the Maori Party is delaying the process.
Pita Sharples says
the Treaty of Waitangi needs to be considered first.
Maori have always referred back to the Treaty of Waitangi.
They want to know where it sits within NZ law.
But Metiria Turei says this is a massive undertaking
and should not be left for a few to decide, but the multitudes.
The Prime Minister's response was that it should be left
to national referendum to decide
whether we remain under the guise of the Queen of England or not.
- What about the Maori seats, will they be upheld?
That's for the referendum to determine, not me.
In coming weeks, the review will be presented to the government
and to Parliament. Roihana Nuri, Te Karere.
