Who doesn’t want to play a space shooter, and even more specifically who doesn’t want
to play a space shooter that only cost two bucks. Well, that is what you get when you
play A Space Shooter for Two Bucks, which is a space shooter, for two bucks. The game
doesn’t have some big, over inflated sense of what it is. It understands that it is a
simple game, and embraces that fact.
If you have ever played a vertical scrolling shooter, then you will know what to expect.
Enemies spawn at the top and you just blast them and avoid their attacks. Fairly simple,
and the game doesn’t try to change things. What it does do is provide a solid playing
version of this, and it succeeds with flying colors there. Your ship moves smoothly, making
it easy to dodge attacks and your blaster does the right amount to make the enemies
still a challenge. There are weapon power ups that you will collect, which do a great
job at making you feel super powerful for the couple seconds it lasts for.
The game also has a great style, in both the story and the gameplay. The story is simple
but sufficient, you are P. Jefferson and you are out to kill some aliens. That is pretty
much the only excuse you are given and really, it’s the only one you need. The voice acting
is very funny, with many memorable moments that will have you struggling to regain your
composure when the action begins.
The action itself is fast. The game offers a large open map, with around 18 different
levels, each shown with a difficulty meter. There is a recommended path but if you feel
confident enough, you can go in any order. There are two level types, either a side mission
that will earn you upgrades and experience to purchase more upgrades with. Or there are
the main story missions that end in an epic boss battle, and reward you with that bosses
special. And don’t let the game fool you with the difficult meter, because every one
is set to the same level: hard. The game has a high level of challenge, requiring you to
move fast, and shoot faster. But it just makes it that much more satisfying when you send
that alien boss exploding off into space.
This is a great space shooter that is without a doubt, worth the two dollar asking price
and it would be worth it at 3, 4, or even 5 dollars as well.
