Lifeline is really pleased that today the Australian Bureau of Statistics have announced the first round
of adjustments to the 2007
cause of death data.
In particular, what we are pleased about is that the suicide data
is becoming more and more accurate
What we have found today
is that the recorded deaths for 2007 which were recorded as 1,181
we now know with the first round of adjustments that 2,054
which is an increase of about 8.5%
there will be two more years of adjustments to this data
and why this is important is that
this enables us to have more accurate information so we can target our services to the right places
to the right people
we can do better research - more accurate research
and therefore we can better advice and policy information and hopefully
finding and resources for suicide prevention in Australia.
We have to remember that suicide is a very very serious issue in our country.
Its significantly higher than road deaths.
As a matter of fact for men under 44
it is double. So there are double the number of suicides than there are deaths on our roads.
So this is a very serious issue that we need to pay close attention to.
The more accurate the information that we have
the better able we will be to target our services.
