When you reach the end of a crocheted row and you're about to begin the next row, you
need to do what's called a turning chain to create the height needed for the next row.
So if you look at your stitches in order of height like steps, you have your single, your
half double, your double, and your triple. You need a turning chain equal to their height.
So for a single crochet, you just need one turning chain. For a half double, you'd need
two turning chains. For a double, you'd need three and for a triple, you'd need four. So
what that means to you is that when you get to the end of your row, and you're ready to
turn it around, you go into your last stitch, and say we were making a half double on the
next row, you would chain two, that's your turning chain, turn your work, and now you've
got a stitch high enough to start your next row.
